The air was cold, practically freezing right to the bone. Frost was built up against almost every window, every door brushed aside a slight layer of snow as it creaked open. Every person who had a brain either stayed inside with their warm fires, or hurried around the streets like mice against a broom.
The castle only had one difference, and that was that they had more wood and coal to burn. The outside was still deathly freezing. The training grounds had burnt coals everywhere, and most of the dirt had frozen over.
Alux had the luxury of being able to rest in his room, with a heavy blanket resting over him. His room had a few candles laying around it, and he was huddled as far under as he could be. To his surprise, he had the day off. The ladies refused to show up, and training was a no due to the weather.
The room was nice and warm, and Alux was practically seconds away from falling asleep. Until he heard a pattern of knocks at the door.
"Alux? Alux?"
Petro?
Right. He didn't know there was a day off. Alux didn't want to use the strength to get out of bed.
"Come in!" He sat up slightly, his head fuzzy. Sometimes, the winter was nice. In fleeting moments, moments that he wished could be more memorable. Half his winters were either the worst months of his life or the most calm. He supposed the summer was worse, considering there was hardly a way to escape the heat of it.
The door creaked open, and Petro stumbled in. There were a few dark spots on his shoulders, probably from melted snow. A bit of snow was still stuck on his bag, which he began to brush off as soon as he could. The door shut behind him with a click.
"You slept in again?"
"No, I don't have anything to do today. They just told me to study."
"Oh." Petro whispered something under his breath, which Alux could only assume was some sort of curse. He only knew he said something because he saw his mouth move, and barely heard the faint noise of breath trying to become words.
"Sorry..."
"It's okay." There was a bit of a grumble to his voice, "I can go home. It's not a bad walk, it's just stormy."
The snow was flicking against the window, and Alux tilted his head back to see. There wasn't anything distinguishable out there, just flickers of white, grey, and blue. Even the rest of the castle that usually was visible had vanished.
"No. No, it's okay. Stay here for a bit."
"... you sure?"
"Yeah! It's warm in here. You're freezing! Your face is all red!"
"It's okay." Petro did raise a hand up to feel his face as he spoke, checking to make sure it's actually cold. Of course, it was. He plopped down onto Alux's bed, letting his bag fall off his shoulder as he did so. It hit the floor with a thump, and a few books fell out.
"You get to live like this?" Petro asked without pause, already curling up on top of the blanket. Alux rolled his eyes slightly, and leaned forward to pull some of the blanket onto Petro.
He replied with a sigh, then actual words, "Yeah. It's nice for times like this."
"Mm." Petro pulled himself up farther, the blanket under him practically made it feel like he was climbing on lumps of feathers or slime. The most he really had to keep himself warm was a scarf, which was tied so tightly around his neck some would think he tried to string himself up with it.
