day 6: confession

Transcript of Miles Edgeworth's acceptance speech for the position of Chief Prosecutor

[The hall in which the speech is given is lavishly decorated, every surface covered in reds and golds, it being December. Despite his turbulent past with the season, Miles Edgeworth marches up to the podium with his head held high to tumultuous applause, a few audience members even standing up from their seats. He clears his throat, adjusts his cravat, and begins speaking.]

Thank you all for joining me here today, to celebrate this momentous occasion. Not just for me, but for the entire American legal system. For this promotion does not only mean an increased salary for me, [This earns a rumble of laughter throughout the hall.] but the implementation of the juror system.

[The applause is so great, you can hardly hear yourself think. Edgeworth is taken aback by this display, and a genuine smile breaks out on his face. He glances somewhere specific in the crowd and his smile grows, before the applause dies down and he returns to speaking.]

This new system will ensure fairer trials, where the attorneys are given more time to prepare and their clients a higher chance of getting justice. The burden of a verdict will not rest upon a singular person, but a group of the defendant's peers, who will be able to judge the guilt of the victim with more accuracy than the Judge. I do not mean to offend you, sir, but you are only one person and thus cannot relate to everyone.

[Heads nod around the room, as people who had been opposed to the juror system out of a dislike of change are persuaded by the man's elegant arguments. A whoop sounds from the back of the crowd, and the camera pans to focus on a young woman in Kurain religious clothing. A man in a blue suit cheers, and a woman in a grey dress over a white blouse rolls her eyes at both of them. Edgeworth chuckles into the mic.]

And that brings me to the next part of this speech. As many of you know, it is traditional for the promoter to thank those they believe have aided them in their legal and personal growth journeys. As such, I shall begin with Detective Gumshoe. He was unable to attend today due to an investigation, but I will thank him regardless.

He bore the burnt of my anger during my personal journey. With the number of salary cuts he received, I believe that at at least one point in the past decade he was paying to work in my office. [The laughter is louder this time, and Edgeworth gives a sheepish smile in response to the laughter.] He was truly helpful during my career, and so for that I shall give him my utmost gratitude.

The second figure I would like to thank is my big sister, Franziska Von Karma. [Edgeworth smiles ruefully before the camera turns to show the woman in the grey dress standing up, smug smile evident. The camera follows her as she walks up onto the stage, standing next to the podium and looking at her brother.] She was a tremendous help in formulating the juror system, and in learning how to become a prosecutor.

She has been at my side for twenty-five years, and I would not change a thing. Thank you for being my coworker, my friend, and most of all my sister.

[The stoic young woman blinks heavily, raising a hand to her mouth to hide the quiver of her lip. Edgeworth gives her a small smile and she buries her face in her hands, walking over to the row of chairs placed behind the podium and off to the audience's right for the people that have been thanked by the promotee.]

The next individual that has helped me in my journey is the one and only Maya Fey. [The camera shows the girl from before in the religious clothes shooting up out of her seat, so quickly that she almost falls over before the man in blue stands up and catches her. They both laugh before she makes her way up to the stage, standing in the same place the other woman did. She is openly crying, clearly surprised by this.]

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for forgiving me for trying to put you in jail for murder. Multiple times. Although you do need to get a hobby that doesn't involve court rooms, do forgive me for saying. [Another round of laughter echoes through the crowd, and the girl even cracks a small smile through her tears.] You have been a constant beam of light and happiness since we became friends, and you were a great assist in many of my investigations.

Thank you for being my friend, Kurain Channeling Master Mystic Maya Fey. [The girl sniffles, close to openly wailing. She meanders over to her seat next to the young woman from before, who wraps an arm around her shoulder and comforts her softly as Edgeworth moves on to the next portion of his speech.]

The last and most important thanks I have to give is to the person in the world who is most important to me. Without him I would not be standing here to speak to you. I would have been executed ten years ago for the DL-6 incident, or be still the "Demon Prosecutor" and our system would remain broken. [Edgeworth is beginning to visibly tear up, and the audience murmurs quietly about the identity of this mystery man.]

He gave up his career for the chance of finding me again. The years he has been by my side are without a doubt the happiest of my life. A man of unmatched legal prowess and intelligence, he was crucial to the development and implementation of the juror system. I offer the gratitude only one who has had their life saved again and again can give to my partner.

The one and only Phoenix Wright. [The camera turns to see the man in blue standing up. He is repeatedly wiping his eyes as if trying to dislodge a particularly stubborn eyelash. He walks slowly up to the stage in seeming disbelief that this is happening, and when he stands next to the prosecutor they are both firmly past 'misty-eyed.']

[The girl in purple begins chanting, 'Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!' She is quickly joined by the young woman in grey, who is sporting the biggest smirk you've ever seen in your life. Edgeworth shoots her a debilitating glare before members of the audience begin to join in, first sparingly, then in mass numbers before the entire LA legal community is chanting like overexcited schoolchildren. The man in blue tips his head back and roars with laughter as Edgeworth turns the same color as his suit.]

[The man in blue abruptly stops laughing and pulls Edgeworth into a passionate kiss, and Edgeworth melts into the embrace before pulling away and coughing.] After that, er, distraction - [He glares at the girl in purple, who sticks her tongue out at him.] - I would like to continue my speech. [The audience quiets down, and he continues as the man in blue happily goes to sit in the chairs.]

One may notice that almost all of my thanks are for individuals who have helped me personally. That is because I believe that many prosecutors are too detached from their jobs, treating them as nothing more than another obstacle to their win streak and going to almost any lengths to continue that streak. [Smug looks adorn the faces of defense attorneys around the room.]

Many prosecutors I know could stand a little personal growth, so I encourage you all to look to the people close to you. The legal profession needs more growth, more feeling, more humanity. Work with, not against each other to find the truth.

After all, isn't that the whole point?

[Miles Edgeworth steps back from the podium to a standing ovation, both from the audience and his friends seated on the stage. He bows, and when he brings his face back up it is shining with a smile brighter than all the lights in the room. The blue-clad man and the two young women run up to him and group-hug him as the applause grows louder. The camera sweeps across the audience, full of smiles and wet eyes, before going black.]
