Mom waited for us by Haley's bed. Muted sunlight seeped through the curtains, bathing the room in soft shadows. Mom's eyes glowed in the dimness, her pursed lips bracketed by exhaustion lines.
Haley was still laying on her stomach, the covers pulled up to her bare shoulders. Her face was turned sideways and her skin leeched of color.
Jun made a move to step forward. Ezra jerked him into place with a low growl.
"I'm not going to hurt her," Jun said, his voice tight. Ezra didn't let go.
I put my hand on his forearm and squeezed. "He won't."
"How do you know?"
I smiled. "My female instinct."
The bond thrummed with Ezra's amusement, and he let go of Jun. Jun limped forward, dragging one leg, until he stood over Haley's bed.
His dark eyes traced her features, his fingers twitching. And when he slowly reached for her face, his hand shook slightly.
Grazing a finger over her cheekbone, he asked in a low voice, as if afraid to wake her up, "What happened?"
"One of the students attacked her. Stabbed her in the back with a silver knife. She's lucky it didn't nick her heart," Ezra replied, watching him carefully. "It happened simultaneously with the attack on the prison. You can guess the reason for the attacks, can't you, Jun?"
Jun's jaw clenched. He closed his eyes for a moment, and when they opened, the conflict was clear as day.
"Why did you bring me here?" Jun asked, raising his suspicious gaze to Ezra.
It was Mom who replied. "Haley lost too much blood. We healed the silver wound, and we tried to help with the blood regeneration, but there's only so much we can do. We thought maybe her mate's presence would help, don't you think?"
Jun's hand curled into a fist. "So it has nothing to do with trying to flip me to your side?"
"Does it matter?" Mom cocked her head aside, regarding Jun calmly. "You can make of it what you want. I know you're not stupid. But these are the facts: Your people tried to kill you and Haley because they're afraid you might've slipped and told her something, or that you would in the future. They almost succeeded with Haley, as you can see."
Mom lowered Haley's covers, revealing her back. The purplish scar stood out against her brown skin.
"Are we trying to use this attack to our advantage?" Mom continued, pulling the covers back up. "You bet we are. We're not going to let Haley's blood go to waste. If it means using it to make you flip to our side, we will. Because we're doing it so that Haley and everyone else we love will be safe in the future. The question is, why are you doing what you're doing?"
Jun's jaw ticked. He frowned, his thoughtful gaze on Haley, his fingers grazing her cheek. "I have my reasons."
Mom hummed. "I see. But you'll need to make a decision, Jun, and soon. What is more important to you? Your loyalty to them? or Haley? Because you can't have both."
Jun's eyes snapped to my mother's. "That's a nice speech. I don't see you asking the same question to Haley. Wouldn't she have to choose between her loyalty to you and me?"
Mom smiled. "No. As much as you want to have us killed, we won't do the same to you. Because that would hurt Haley. Haley's loyalties don't put you in danger, but your loyalties almost got her killed."
Jun closed his eyes tightly.
"Your Mom is a smart woman," Ezra linked me, and I had to agree. I wished I could someday be that wise.
