Dad teleported right in front of Jeremiah, taking him off guard. He threw a hard right, but the vampire hopped away, quickly righting himself. He snarled, fangs extending, and lunged toward Dad.

"Stop! The council is in session!" Nadia said, incensed. Everyone stood up and made room for the fight. Next to me, Mom's glowing eyes watched the vampire's every move.

Dad dodged Jeremiah's sharp right, but couldn't avoid his left hand. The vampire's elongated claws left a line of blood on Dad's neck. Dad kicked, catching Jeremiah's side. Bones cracked, but the vampire didn't even flinch.

He picked a chair and threw it at Dad. Dad kicked the chair away, splintering it to pieces that scattered all over the place. The leg of a chair flew right toward Nadia. She dropped behind a table just in time to avoid it, and popped back up.

"This is preposterous!" she said. "Someone stop them!"

No one did. People seemed more interested in witnessing the fight.

"Is this okay?" I asked no one in particular. Dad and Jeremiah exchanged a series of strikes that seemed to do no real damage.

"People want to see if we're as powerful as we appear," Mom linked me. "This is as good a chance as any. Your Dad wanted it to happen. It'll make anyone who wants to attack us think twice before doing so."

I understood that, but I didn't like it. Dad had been poisoned only hours ago.

Dad and Jeremiah were a blur of flying limbs. Jeremiah flew and hit the glass wall, breaking right through it in a sparkling shower of glass shards. And the fight transferred outside.

We all filed out, jumping over broken glass. Ezra squeezed through the crowd, making a path for me and Mom to the front of the spectators standing on the patio.

Dad clocked Jeremiah in the back of the head with his elbow. The vampire staggered, swaying on his feet. Dad took advantage and launched a series of lightning quick attacks a normal human eye wouldn't be able to catch. Jeremiah parried as much as he could, but the hit to the head must've been harder than I thought, because his movements were sluggish for a vampire. But five seconds later, he recovered and returned dad's attacks.

Jeremiah's vampire speed was a clear advantage, but Dad countered it using his teleportation ability. He would be in front of Jeremiah then disappear and pop up right behind him in a blink.

It took extreme finesse to be able to do that in the middle of a fight.

If I had to teleport, I had to have a clear image of the place I wanted to teleport to and I had to be really focused. The fact that Dad managed to do that with such ease made me realize I still had a long way to go.

But the fight had a clear winner, and everyone could see that. Jeremiah's movements slowed down as Dad kept targeting the vampire's head. And after minutes of going back and forth, Jeremiah finally dropped to the ground.

He struggled to climb to his feet, but Dad kicked him back down. Murmurs rose in the air, Mom breathed out a heavy sigh next to me.

True to his word, other than teleportation, Dad really hadn't used his magic.

"Hey! We want to see the elemental magic!" One of the witches called out.

"Yeah!" A vampire replied, looking bright-eyed and giddy from watching a fight.

I shook my head. Men.

Dad stood over Jeremiah, who was still struggling to his feet. Dad frowned. "Give up already."
