I immediately teleported to my father's side, my heart a wild drum in my chest.
Blood stained his mouth, his chin and dripped down in startlingly red droplets on his white shirt. He dropped the glass he'd been holding. The tinkle of the shattering glass sounded oddly musical among the furious whispers of the staring guests.
Ezra was beside me in a blink.
"It must've been in his drink," mom said, her voice shaky as she tried to keep my father upright while he coughed out more blood.
Ezra crouched down and swiped a finger across the spilled liquid and brought it to his nose. He coughed, wiping his finger on his shirt, leaving a pinkish stain on his shirt.
"It smells like that same powder we found in Emma's room," he linked us, just as Zyron and the others rallied around us. Zane and Eleanor approached as well, putting on a good show of looking worried.
"We need to get him out of here," Orton said, glowing eyes scanning the countless faces around us with mistrust.
"I'm fine," Dad said firmly. But he wasn't fine. He was still coughing blood.
Ezra straightened and strode towards someone. The waiter who stood by with a tray of drinks, also watching the scene unfold, took a startled step back, the glasses clattering on the tray. Ezra snatched a glass from the tray and brought it to his nose. Then another glass.
He snarled. "They're all laced."
Vlad put his hand on Dad's shoulder. "Olin, why don't you-?"
"I'm not running away. This is our first time meeting with the rest of the supernatural world. If we show weakness now, it'll set the tone for all our future dealings. I'm fine," Dad said, standing up straight and wiping a hand across his mouth. He only smeared the blood further across his jaw. With the blazing fury glowing in his eyes, he looked scary.
He exchanged a look with my mother and she nodded, her lips pursed.
Alpha Blackrock appeared with his mate. He exchanged a long look with Zyron, then Willow disappeared.
"I thought they weren't impervious to silver," I heard one of the guests whisper.
"It's not silver. It doesn't smell like it," another replied.
"So they do have a kryptonite. I wonder what that is..."
A wave of speculative whispers ran through the crowd. Everywhere I looked, I thought I could see hostile gazes waiting just for the right moment to pounce, to use our weakness against us. I felt like the walls were closing in on us. But it was just an illusion born out of my fear for my father.
My magic reacted to my emotions, buzzing and rushing under my skin. I took a deep breath and tried blocking out the whispers and the looks.
"Alright, everyone," Nadia said, cutting through the crowd to stand near us. She clapped her hand once. "I'm told lunch is ready. Why don't we head over to the banquet hall? Come on now, move along."
Nadia, Alpha Blackrock and Vlad ushered people toward the ballroom. Nadia looked over her shoulder and gave me an encouraging smile.
"Thank you," I mouthed and she winked before disappearing inside as well.
"Why don't you go ahead, Zane?" Zyron told Zane. "Try to keep the wolves under control."
"Alright." Zane looked at my father. "Are you sure you're okay, Olin?"
"Perfect." My father offered a tight smile, looking as if he wanted to pluck Zane's tongue out. I hoped Zane would chuck it up to my father being just attacked.
