Ezra's POV
"Either make out or stop arguing," Sam said, addressing the love birds in the backseat.
I glanced back to find Haley and Jun glaring at Sam. Poor Orton sat between them, looking like he'd rather be anywhere but there.
They'd been arguing nonstop ever since we left the hotel. The SUV brimmed with tension. Between their bickering and the anticipation of tonight's mission, my wolf was ready to rip out of my skin and growl to shut them up.
It was enough that I had to be away from Orla at such an important time. Right now, they would be ready to storm the Coalition meeting.
Orla and I agreed to not link each other unless there was an emergency. I didn't want to link her at the wrong time and cause her to lose focus in a critical moment. But I still checked on her through the bond. It felt tense and apprehensive, but that wasn't alarming considering the situation.
Sam drove the car through the lit-up streets of the city.
For the Coalition headquarters, I had expected an old spooky mansion or an overgrown castle in the middle of the woods. Instead, the place was an apartment building smack in the middle of the human-filled city.
I imagined the block would be bustling with activity by day. It housed several office and apartment buildings. The steel and glass monstrosities battling for height to claim the night sky.
"Here is close enough," Jun suddenly said. Sam eased the car to a stop. The buildings lining the street were all at least ten floors tall. I glanced around in dismay. Not being able to see the sky made my wolf claustrophobic, which only irritated me further. I just wanted this night to end well so Orla and I could go home.
The car of the werewolves following us stopped far enough to not rouse suspicion. Dad insisted on sending a team of guards with us. Too many supernaturals would only attract attention, but I didn't argue with him. I understood his protective sentiments. I was his only son. Besides, the guards would stay in the car unless we needed them.
Haley leaned forward to peek at the building at the end of the street. It blended with its neighbors seamlessly. No one would tell this was the lair of evil supernaturals.
"Well, at least they're not cliché," she said.
"Why here?" I asked.
I glanced in the rearview mirror to see Jun shrug. "Beats me. When I joined, this was already the headquarters."
"Hiding in plain sight," Sam said, drumming his fingers on the steering wheel. "Besides, very few supernaturals would even venture this deep into a city. Werewolves live on pack lands in forested areas. Their sharp senses would go crazy if they lived in the middle of all these scents and sounds.
"Witches prefer to live in small towns or in less crowded parts of big cities, mostly in suburbs where nature isn't as swallowed by concrete. Vampires as well. The ones who live in cities wouldn't stay in crowded places like this for long. The temptation of human blood would be too much. So in a way, this is the perfect place to hide from other supernaturals."
"What about humans?" Orton asked.
"The place is an actual office building," Jun explained. "It hosts several corporations that are active. The Coalition headquarters is only a small part of the building."
Hiding among so many humans was either stupid or brilliant. Considering the fact that they managed to stay hidden for decades, I'd say it was the latter.
Orla's emotions ebbed and flowed through the bond. I ran my hand through my hair and forced myself to focus on the task at hand, controlling my own emotions to not disturb her.
