"What? What is it?" I asked, looking between the two frozen males next to me. The bond shook under Ezra's tumultuous emotions. Shock and disbelief trumped all of them.
"This handwriting is... familiar," Ezra said. He slanted a look at Sam, who had gone pale. I'd never seen him this shaken before, and it only made my guts twist further.
"This is Zane's handwriting," Sam whispered. My heart dropped. No. It couldn't be.
"It has to be a misunderstanding. Are you sure it's Zane's handwriting, Sam? It could just be similar," I said.
Sam shook his head. "I hope you're right, Little Red. I hope you're right."
Ezra's head snapped to the window. "A car is here."
Sam crept to the window and peeked through the curtains, the garden lights casting an iridescent pale blue sheen across his eyes. He lifted his lip in a silent snarl.
"Damn it. Damn it all to hell," he cursed.
Ezra swiped the USB and the wooden box out of the safe. I closed it- unfortunately, I couldn't put the magic lock back in place- and we joined Sam by the window.
Outside, right beside a sleek black car, stood Frederick next to a familiar dark-headed man. The two standing close in a heated discussion.
Zane.
My heart felt like it was shattering to a hundred pieces.
Sam dropped the curtain, his face thunderous. "Let's leave. I'll link Vlad to summon Frederick. Since we can't put the magic back in place and we need time to look through our findings, he'll know his place has been compromised, and anything we find might become useless."
"What if he comes inside first?" Ezra asked.
"Vlad doesn't like using his summoning ability, but it's quite effective. Frederick can't ignore it more than a couple of minutes. And Vlad will be able to keep him away for at least a few days. Hopefully we'll have something by then," Sam twisted his lips in a wry smile. "Now that we know who the traitor is, no need to keep Vlad out of the loop."
Ezra linked Orton, who appeared a second later and teleported us straight back home. Someone would have to go back to fetch the car.
My parents and Ezra's parents waited for us in our living room. The curtains were drawn over the windows and back door. Dad was pacing back and forth, his hair looked ablaze under the orange glow of the crackling fireplace.
He closed the distance between us and gathered me in his arms, patting the back of my head.
"You're okay?"
"Yes. Just a little tired."
Dad pulled back, his smile relieved. He sat on the arm of Mom's chair.
"Do you have anything?" Zyron asked, sitting next to Wren on the couch.
Ezra and Sam exchanged a heavy look. This wouldn't be good. This wouldn't be good at all. To suspect his own brother of betrayal... I didn't know what that might do to Zyron's control.
But I was putting the cart in front of the horse. There might still be an explanation. Maybe it wasn't Zane's handwriting, after all. Maybe it was just an innocent note. Maybe Zane was there tonight under Zyron's orders. Maybe...
