Ezra's POV

Zach had always been a straight forward guy.

He'd inherited his father's penchant for mischief, but unlike uncle Zane, Zach didn't have a conniving bone in his body.

I'd always admired uncle Zane's cunning nature, as had Dad, because it always worked in our best interest on more than one occasion.

But now I knew just how truly sly he was. So sly he had us all fooled.

But Zach... Zach faced everything head on. He didn't do well with reading between the lines and scheming. That was more Ashley's forte. Which made her his perfect match.

So when Sam's mind link came, it brought a welcome rush of relief.

"I got nothing."

"Are you sure?" I asked.

"Yep. I checked both their computers, went through all their stuff. I found nothing," he replied. "But you know that doesn't make them absolutely in the clear."

I looked at Zach, who was arguing with Hayden about the basketball game currently playing on screen. We were in my parents' living room, hanging out with Haley, Meredith, Orton and Blake.

The setting sun shone through the glass doors, painting a thick orange beam over the dark wooden floors. The sounds of the basketball game, laughter and the guys' good-natured arguing filled the place. The upbeat mood in the massive living room was a sharp contrast to my somber mood. My wolf wanted out. I was too tense. What I wouldn't do to stretch my legs in a long run and feel the wind against my fur.

Fortunately, no one asked why I was scowling since it was my default expression. But poor Orla had to fake a smile.

Although she turned out to be pretty nifty at pretending when it came down to it, I could feel her starting to crumple under the pressure of the difficult couple of days we'd been through.

I moved to stand behind her, leaned on the back of the couch and squeezed her shoulder. She turned to smile at me, and even though it was tense, the sight settled down my wolf.

"Sam said he didn't find anything suspicious," I linked her.

Her shoulder lost some of its tension. "Thank God," she whispered.

"It doesn't mean they're not involved. But the chance is lower," I said.

The front door opened then, and Mom and Dad walked in.

"Having fun?" Mom asked, putting an aluminum covered tray on the coffee table. The smell of dark chocolate and sugar tickled my nose. "Your mom sent you these, Orla."

"Oooh, brownies," Orla said, leaning forward.

"I'm surprised you can still eat brownies, Orla," Blake snickered.

"Did you know about the time she got high off pot brownies," Haley asked Orton, then proceeded to give a detailed account of the story. I lost count how many times this story was told.

Orton laughed his ass off. He would certainly use this as teasing material against his sister.

"I wish I could've seen you high, Orla," Mom said, sitting on an armchair and massaging her calves.
