BELLAMY'S POV:
i threw up the flaps of every tent, hoping to be met with a familiar flash of long brown hair and light eyes. no, no, and no. i cursed myself, unsuccessful in the hunt for my sister. i realized belatedly how much noise i must have been making, but decided that most people were asleep and wouldn't wake anyway. the nights events had proved exhausting — building rockets from scratch had not been an easy task.my body sagged with weariness as i continued walking, though i hadn't been much of a help. if anything, i had caused this mess and deserved to feel the pain and guilt of what my choices had led to for three hundred people. my own people.
a smaller tent near the outskirts of the cluster was drawn open. black boots were visible on the ground in front of it. i hurried over, hoping to catch someone who was still awake.
my pulse quickened as madeline stared up at me, her eyes dark. she looked as if she had been up for awhile, with no intentions of trying to fall asleep. i tried to match her steely gaze as best i could, but only ended up looking pained.
"you're awake?" i asked stupidly. get it together, blake.
"well, atleast we know that you don't need glasses. that's always good, since you most likely would have broken them too," she paused. "like the radio."
i laughed dryly. "raven's flares will work."
"her radio would've worked better," she replied, getting to her feet. her face was unreadable, dreary in a way i hadn't expected.
"i still haven't seen octavia," i told her, hoping to steer the conversation in another direction.
"it's octavia. she's fine i'm sure," madeline said with clearly feigned confidence.
"no. i've checked everywhere in camp, she's not here."
she was silent for a minute, finally understanding the gravity of the situation. someone has gone missing from camp. we don't know if she's wandered off, or was forced to leave. at last, she sighed and bit the lower middle of her lip. i directed my gaze upwards at her eyes. staring wouldn't help anyone.
"okay. let's check again. i'll get the tents, you take the dropship." we had begun walking, matching each others strides almost in complete perfection.
"thank you," i managed a brief word of gratitude before staring ahead at the overwhelming darkness before us.
"don't thank me. i'm not doing this for you. i'm doing it for octavia," she answered coldly.
