MADELINE'S POV: lincoln came back with clarke and finn just as he said he would. we embraced and were grateful all for about two minutes, until lincoln tore us off of each other and began leading us through the endarkened forest as sounds of war paraded on behind. embers and smoke clouded the starless sky as he pushed us towards a tunnel camouflaged to look like a large log. there were two entrances.
"you have to hurry," lincoln warned. "tristan will find you, and by now anya must know that madeline isn't dead."
i raised my eyebrows in confusion. "tristan? is he the commander?" it was clear that there was another leader, someone even more powerful than anya here. someone we had yet to meet.
lincoln shook his head. "no. but he will waste no time in slaughtering your people."
clarke gestured towards the entrances. "but where do these lead? how can we possibly help our people if we don't make it back in time for dawn?"
i paused, trying to take the situation in for what it was. "we split up. these probably lead to everywhere." i jumped into the closest entrance, not waiting for anyone to follow.
"madeline!!' finn called after me. "you don't know these tunnels!"
i let my hands and feet lead the way, knowing that if i stopped to think for even a second i wouldn't be able to move on. at some point, the hard dirt of the compact walls began to crumble into a finer dust. it was almost like sand, but not soft enough. my foot slipped out from underneath me, and my body lurched foward.
there was no floor to cushion my fall. instead i plummeted into open air.
seconds went by. i bit down on my tongue and tasted a familiar metallic tang.
whatever you do, don't scream.
i hit something else hard. i was back on the ground again. it was almost impossible to see where i was now, but an object illuminated this area that hadn't been with me in the tunnels.
i forced myself to stumble into an upright position. but my ankle wouldn't obey. i had been through more in the span of these few days than i had in my entire life, and my body had clearly reached its physical limit.
i limped towards a sconce on the wall, which really was a stick lit with a flame, and collapsed underneath it. i pulled the leg of my pants up ever so slightly so that I could examine my contorted ankle. it would bruise and swell if i didn't deal with it now.
back on the ark, i would have been sent to medical.
back on the ark, i would be given a proper splint and been told to rest.
