MADELINE'S POV:
bellamy and i left the dropship so that we could warn the others. a cloud of black smoke drifted into the distance a few miles away, fading higher and higher into the pale blue of the sky.

clarke was waiting for us when we got there.

""i am become death, destroyer of worlds,"" she quoted.

i gave her a strange look. "it's oppenheimer," clarke clarified. "the man who built the first—"

"i know who oppenheimer is," bellamy cut her off. "it's this one who doesn't," he pointed a thumb in my direction. i fought the urge to step on his boot.

"does this mean jasper made the shot?" i asked instead.

"it would make sense," clarke said. "finally, some good news."

i sighed in relief. for once, we could keep our guard down. it was unlikely that the grounders would attack if they believed we had more explosives.

"there!" harper shouted from her post behind an oak tree. "it's them! they're back!"

i turned to see the large gates being opened as monty and jasper marched back into camp. we all applauded loudly, the majority of everyone feeling much better now that the sickness had passed. i was happy to see that jasper was doing a better impression of humbleness, unlike his boasting before. i assumed that monty had talked sense into him.

finn and raven were next. my heart skipped a beat as i saw her arm slung lazily over finn's shoulder. there was blood on her face, and by the way that finn was carrying her, i could tell that she was still fighting through the worst of the virus.

a month ago, i would have been worried for my friend's health. today, i thought about what our best mechanic being out of commission would mean for our people.

you care, i reminded myself. you love raven.

as if bellamy could read my thoughts, he lowered his eyes to mine. "shes going to be okay."

i gave him a half nod. "i know. it's murphy i'm worried about," i lied. "we've had fourteen deaths in total so far. and i know that he was right about the bridge, but i don't know what's best for us."

"we can't pardon him," he responded. his mind was clearly still set.

"it's hard running things," i answered. "maybe you should be talking about this with clarke instead."

"we can run it by her," he agreed. "but i want to know what you think we should do."

i breathed deeply. "i want to survive. and that means protecting as many of our people as possible. no matter the cost."
