Part 14: golden

after a few days of sleeping on the hard floor of the church, one morning i woke up earlier then i usually did. the sun was barely staring to come up.
when i got up i noticed pony wasn't here and it was just johnny who was asleep.

i got up and walked outside the church to see pony staring at the sky.
I walked to him not saying a word, i sat down below a tree and watched the sky aswell.

i put my head down "pony.. I miss our friendship"
pony didn't say anything and just looked at the sky

"i don't want me and johnnys relationship to be in the way of our friendship.. we're we're inseparable remember? I miss those days"

pony finally said something "i do too"

"and im sorry for how i reacted towards cherry. i was just jealous.. jealous because i really liked you.. like really, really liked you pony. but I guess we found different people, like you have cherry and i have johnny."

pony finally looked at me

"maybe we weren't mean to be lovers.. maybe we were meant to be friends" I say gently

I stood up and hugged pony, signaling that the fight is over and we are happy with our lives.

soon the sun started to come up and johnny woke up to.
all three of us watched the sunrise in silence all the way until the sun was at its peak and was shining golden light at us.
"man that was pretty" johnny says with his arm over my shoulder.

"the mist was pretty, gold and silver" I say as all the off us continue looking at the sky.

"too bad it can't stay like that all the time" johnny says

"nothing gold can stay" pony blurts out

johnny looks at him "what?"

pony continued to look at the sky
"Natures first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold,
Her early leafs a flower,
But only so an hour
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So eden sank to grief
So dawn goes down to say
nothing gold can stay"

me and johnny were both left shocked
"where did you learn that? that's what i meant?"

The boys were still talking but i was still looked at the sky.
"i'm gonna head inside" I said trying to not interrupt there conversation.
I knew they were closer then me and pony so i know it's important for them to have these type of conversations to become close again.

I headed inside and tried playing cards by myself
but it did not turn out very well.
eventually pony and johnny came back inside but i didn't realize.

"oh yeah!" i say throwing my cards down, acting like i was playing against someone but it wss just me.
pony and johnny start laughing at me behind, as jump and whip my head around.

"you never saw that!" i say pointing at both of them.

johnny continues laughing "alright, alright we won't tell a soul.. as long as you let us play with you"  johnny says

"be my guest" i point to the ground next to me as pony and johnny sit down next to me.

after almost two hours of playing i threw down my cards and i had won! i took the pile of cigarettes they all bet on and dragged them towards me, it was almost 30 cigarettes.

"thank you very much!" i say sarcastically

pony shakes his head "hey! you gotta share atleast one of those!"

i stand up and walk over to where we keep the food "alright fine i will!"

"i'm gonna make baloney sandwiches for lunch" I said grabbing two pieces of bread out of the bag.

"delicious myyy favorite" pony says sarcastically as johnny laughs at him.

"i'm sorry we don't have a chef in our church" i say walking over to pony and johnny handing them the sandwiches.

i sat down as we all started eating the sandwiches, we all had to hold back our gags from eating baloney so much.

time skip to later at night

we all sat on the bench they have inside of the church smoking cigarettes.

pony and johnny were trying to blow smoke rings.
johnny wasn't in a good mood because he lost so many times at cards.

"do you guys ever think that.. just a few days ago we were at the drive in and.."

johnny quickly stood up "would you stop it! shut up about that day! i killed a kid that day! he was not even 17.. and i killed him"
johnny sat down in the corner crying and biting his knuckles.

ponyboy walked over and sat next to him

"how'd you like to live with that?" pony says crying band burying his face in his hands. ponyboy starts crying to.

johnny gets up and paces back and forth

"what are we gonna do" pony says crying

johnny stops in his tracks and looks at us "this is my fault, for bringing a 13 year old kid and a girl along. you ought to get home! you can't get in any trouble!"

i start crying when he says that
"you take that back!" i point at johnny

"no! i'm 14! i've been 14 for a month!" pony buds in sobbing at this point.

"and we are in this just as much as you johnny! just give me a break" i sit down crying in my hands. as pony sits a little farther down also crying.

"..i'm sorry guys.. i didn't mean it like that" johnny says walking up to pony and rubbing his shoulders then johnny walks over to me.

"don't cry bev.. we'll be okay" johnny says getting me to stand up and wrap my arms around his neck and give him a big hug crying in his shoulder as he wraps his arms around my waist.

when we all got over crying, we fell asleep straight away.
