"you have gotten better with your sword skills captain" i said
"thank you, sir, you are as strong as usual" she replied as matthius gave me a towel
"nicely done as usual, sir" he said
"commander, how's the crew" i asked
"well, sir, i have just gotten a report about a completed combat drill, the crew are just barely passing your expectations sir" matthius said, causing annalise to flinch, being the former helmsman of the reliant she was well aware of alexandre von lichtenwald's expectations, he was exceedingly hard to please
then again, she was one of the people who knew the secret behind those expectations of her former superior, for she got her command upon his recommendation, it shocked her, and touched her deeply, she felt true honor for her former captain
"CAPTAIN, COMMANDER" a voice called as the two of us turned, to see a man we both recognized, commander vincent von kincaid, and his XO major jessica el kleiman
"commander, major welcome back" i said
"thank you sir, we sent the strike wings back to the reliant" the commander
"good" i said, the reliant was a smaller vessel as such it had a compliment of only four strike wings of dragoons, but just like the crew they were given extremely high expectations from their captain those expectations caused them to excel greatly, their commander, and XO were no exception
"i hope you are keeping the moron in line, major" i said
"yes sir, though he still seems to find trouble despite my best efforts" the woman replied, i nodded
"doesn't surprise me, so commander, unless you are here to join us why are you interrupting training" i asked, he pulled out a scroll
"i was told to deliver this sir" he said, i took the scroll and read it
"is there a problem captain" the garrison commander, isabella el haiston asked
"the reliant will be departing, in three days, we are heading inland" i said
"for what reason, captain" the commander asked
"the high-king's summons, i have only seen it once, but this is his majesty's writing he has written this summons personally" i said, her face showed signs of shock
"i see, i assume you will be leaving your escort here then" she asked
"of course, i have no need for those two colossal monsters, when we will be traversing our own waters, commander inform the crew i expect them at their best, his highness will be meeting us personally at our arrival, i would prefer not to be the laughing stock of the nation because my misfits decided to act up at the worst possible time" i said
"yes sir, understood sir" he said
"vincent, it seems that you will be heading back to the capital the moment you return from it" i said
"it seems so, captain" he said
three days later, the reliant departed gliding inland through the large river, that led directly to the capital
it took over a week of sailing before the reliant came to port in the capital, alexandre was the first to depart followed, by three others, matthius, vincent, and jessica
"welcome back to the capital, captain lichtenwald" the king said
"your majesty" i said, as the four of us kneeled
"please stand, all of you, welcome home" the king said graciously, as we rose back to our feet
"come, a carriage is waiting, captain you will ride with me won't you" the king asked
"if that is your majesty's wish, of course" i said, he nodded, as we boarded the carriage, where a woman i didn't recognize was waiting, but she bared a striking resemblence to the king, with her silver hair
"this is my third daughter, rosalina von albrecht rosenfield, she has recently been made captain of the imperial navy" the king said
"your highness" i said, with a bow of my head
"we are both officers, and you are my senior, please do not stand on ceremony" she said
"my daughter wishes to follow in your footsteps, and has asked to take command of a vanguard-class battlecruiser" the king said, my eyebrow raised
"i assume by you bringing this up, you wish for my opinion" i asked
"yes, from a man who is still serving on one, what would you say to this" the king asked, the princess also leaned in
"then i do apologize for my rudeness, but with all do respect, are you insane" i asked, she recoiled in shock
"i picked my vessel, because of my own background, i had only five years of experience as a noble, and only two with any form of authority, and i had an extremely powerful defensive djinn, these reasons made it clear that it was best for me to take the smallest ship i could, now i grew to love my ship, hence why i still choose to command it despite having my pick of any ship in our fleet, that said, without the defenses of a djinn like mine, you would be little more then a sitting duck, i would recommend at least a majesty-class battleship, if you absolutely must follow my footsteps" i said, she flinched
"and what would you recommend she take charge of" the king asked
"i know full well that the academy does not pick favorites based on status, since i was recommended by his majesty himself when i joined, as such, you would not be a captain unless the admiralty believed you ready as such, and considering your status, and past experience therein, you should be commanding a royal-sovereign-class ship" i said
"thank you for proving my point, captain lichtenwald" the man said, as the girl looked down embarrassed
"princess, i know commoners who command those ships, and if you truly know me, you will know i do not give such a recommendation lightly, there is one final factor you seem to not be thinking about" i said
"a final factor" she asked confused and even the king looked at me confused
"you are a royal in line for the throne, as such, there are expectations placed upon you, high expectations, honestly if you were to command a vanguard-class, most everyone in and out of the empire would look at you as if you were stupid, as you also must understand you are a target, by our enemies, both within and without the empire" i said
"well said, you are very correct" the king said, i nodded
"your highness we are approaching the palace" the carriage driver said
"understood, please join us captain, your officers will be cared for but there are things for us to discuss" the king said
"of course, your majesty, you would not have summoned your flagship, otherwise" i said
"indeed" the man said
