One month had passed since I returned to Mumbai, and during this time, I had learned so much about Kartik. It was a new morning, a new day, and as I glanced at the clock, I realized it was already late.
"It's too late! What are you doing, Ananya? Get ready fast, you have so many things to do," I muttered to myself.
As I hurried downstairs for breakfast, I noticed that half of the decorations were already done for Mom's birthday. The garden looked stunning, with vibrant flowers and twinkling fairy lights. Kartik, Sid, and Ahaan were busy helping with the decorations. My eyes couldn't help but linger on Kartik, who seemed to be working with such dedication.
"Ananya!" I heard the serious voices of Suhana and Shanaya approaching. They asked why I was so late and mentioned that they had already done half of the decorations.
"Sorry, guys. I slept very late last night. I was packing some return gifts for the guests," I explained.
They sighed but then said, "Okay, just eat something quickly and help us with the rest."
I headed to the dining table, asking Suhana and Shanaya to bring me something since everyone was busy. Just then, a plate of grilled sandwiches was placed in front of me. I looked up to see Kartik, smiling down at me.
"Why are you looking at me like that? Eat it," he said.
I opened my mouth to reply, but Sid called Kartik for some help. Kartik turned to leave but paused and said, "Have it and finish it. I'm sending your friends to keep an eye on you because you'll not eat properly if you're too focused on work."
As he left, Suhana and Shanaya came over. I quickly finished my breakfast and went to help with the decorations. The garden looked beautiful, with roses and lilies adorning every corner. Fairy lights hung from the trees, casting a warm glow over the entire area. Lanterns of various colors were scattered around, creating a magical ambiance.
After helping in the garden, I went back inside. As I walked through the house, I heard Kartik and Sid talking seriously. Curiosity got the better of me, and I stopped to listen.
"There is nothing between us, Sid. Try to understand. Ananya is not my type, and she's my best friend's sister. How can I fall for her?" Kartik's words echoed in my mind, piercing through my heart. My heart sank. I couldn't bear to hear more. Tears filled my eyes as I turned and ran to my room, feeling a mixture of hurt and confusion.
The pain in my chest intensified, and tears welled up in my eyes. I couldn't listen anymore. I turned and ran up to my room, feeling completely heartbroken. I closed the door behind me, leaning against it as the tears flowed freely.
How could I have been so naive? I thought there was something special between us, but I was wrong. Kartik would never see me as anything more than his best friend's sister. I tried to pull myself together, knowing I had to face everyone soon, but the pain was too raw.I sat on my bed, trying to make sense of my emotions. How could I face Kartik tomorrow? How could I pretend that everything was okay when my heart was shattered? The tears kept coming as I realized just how much I had hoped for something more with him.
