I have history buffs for friends
They know the tales of past times
Better than the present trends
They seek to understand the crimes
And unravel the lessons long gone buried
Watching YouTube videos after midnight
Analyzing the past humans have scurried
Detailing lores of the King, the Knight
Chronicling the rise and fall of countries
Besieging the great ardent foreign wars
Reliving losses and venerated old glories
As they drink cups of wine to settle scores
They raise voices in endless fiery debates
Of temporal facts they can't change
Firing from memory precise dates
Offering detailed opinions to derange

What do I know about history?
I know the stories of personal timeless tales
Told by the living, until now sworn to secrecy
Remembering the construction of their fates
I listen intently to the omen, their fair warning
Vividly imagining in my mind their parables
Reverencing the soul touching, heartwarming
Once in a lifetime unheard bedtime stories
So I can rest easy knowing those before me
Have their own drafts of my own chapters
Written after them amidst the endless sea
Of the intertwined lives of sons and daughters
Children marching on in their made up kingdom
Unbeknownst to them the trail they follow
Learning facts, forgetting common wisdom
Pressures and expectations leaving them hollow

Your history is my story
I come from those forged novels
The ones repeated sorely
We learn or duplicate our models
The endless cycle of human history
Bartering stubbornly with the ages
Running from the enigmatic mystery
Hoping to wittingly flash out the aces
We're ready to create our own narrative
To write into the books so one day
Our descendants can be as explanative
As we once were in the school essay
Of the things recorded by the historians
They'll look back fascinated by the horror
Of what the times left for us victorians
Who did and didn't need the past to follow
