OCTOBER 19TH 1979
LUCY'S POV

I took the entire time getting ready, it's not everyday that I put effort into my appearance so I wanted to make sure I looked nice.

Molly had went to Susie's house, she didn't want to be home alone and i didn't blame her, I don't know about the whole situation with dad. Vance opened the bedroom window to smoke, "how do you feel about drinking there?" he asked referring to the party.

I was standing in front of the mirror adjusting pieces of my hair, "I mean, I'll be fine with people drinking around me, I think, but i'm not gonna drink. Are you gonna be cool?" I asked him as he turned to me and nodded. I think I'm going crazy but i feel like he stared at me longer than he should've. Or maybe I stared at him longer. It would be weird if we dated right? Whatever. Dating Vance isn't my biggest concern right now.

The clock read 7:40. Vance was getting on his shoes as I was putting on my perfume. He was wearing a pair of baggy jeans, a black sabbath t-shirt and his famous jean jacket.

Once we were outside and walking to Jamie's, he grabbed my hand. this sudden touch gave me goosebumps. Why is he holding my hand? Am I thinking too deeply about this? WHY IS HE HOLDING MY HAND??

My heels clicked along Jamie's stone path. I could hear the music blaring from the house and hear people screaming and talking. There were people scattered across the front lawn smoking. Vance released my hand and rung the doorbell. A tipsy Finn came and opened the door. It wasn't obvious that he was buzzed by first glance, I only came to the conclusion when he embraced Vance for a hug.

I squeezed past the two, and went on my way to find Jamie. Unlike Finn, Jamie looked and acted sober, she was never one to drink or smoke. "Lucy!" She exclaimed. "Im so glad you made it!" She grabbed my hand and introduced me to some of the people she personally invited. I knew most of them, the only one who I was not familiar with was Amanda. She was a bit short, very coily black hair, and she was very pretty. "Shes in my chemistry class" Jamie shouted to me.

After meeting everyone I found myself wandering to the drinks. My hands got clammy as I saw the beer in a cooler on the floor. I took a deep breath and turned away. I missed drinking but I don't miss the terrible hangovers. I grabbed a grape soda and I scanned the room for Vance. I found Tommy instead. The moment we made eye contact he started to walk towards me, I turned around and tried to avoid getting sucked into a conversation with him, but he was too quick and he grabbed my forearm to stop me from escaping.

"Lucy, Hey! how.. how are you?" I could tell he was acting odd because he still likes me. I let out a subtle sigh, "Im fine Tommy" and took a sip of my soda. I don't know how many more hints I could give him before I tell him flatly. It looked like he was expecting me to carry out the conversation, even though he initiated it first. "Cool, cool... um" I cut him off, "Look Tommy, you're a cool guy, but I don't like you" He looked a little taken back, I gave him a tight lipped smile and walked away after that.

I was walking around and watching everyone drink. It was so crowded and people were bumping into me it was so annoying. I walked to the backyard to have a smoke. I was leaning against the house, soda in one hand and my cigarette in the other, and I watched the people who scattered the yard laughing, having a great time. Why wasn't I? I dropped the butt of my cigarette and Robin came up to me.

"Hey Lucy" I nodded at him and he took the spot next to me, leaning on the house too. He pulls out a cigarette, which I light for him, and asks, " y'know I was thinking, what got you and Vance to start fighting?" I opened my mouth to answer, but i couldn't remember, I let out a short breathy laugh, "I don't remember" I was going to continue on but I saw Robin checking out Amanda. I nudged him to go up to her and he immediately took the opportunity.

But I was still hung on that conversation. Why did Vance and I start fighting? I only remember us starting to fight in freshman year but I can't remember why. My feet were starting to hurt so I moved to a lawn chair. people started to filter out, soon it was just me in the backyard. I had finished my soda and was staring at the stars when I heard someone walking behind me. Even though he was walking on the grass, I could still tell it was Vance. I smiled to myself. I knew him so well I could tell it was him by just his footsteps.

VANCE'S POV

I swear I've been looking everywhere for Lucy. Is it just a coincidence that I can't find Lucy and Robin? Did Robin ask out Lucy? What did Lucy say back? I mean they'd be a perfect couple. No way, they don't have anything in common... do they? I finally saw a glimpse of Robin and it looked like he was talking to a girl who was nothing similar to Lucy. I felt myself calm down a bit. But that still doesn't tell me where the hell Lucy is. I walked past the sliding back door and saw her curly hair. I imminently went out to go talk to her.

I don't know why I was trying to find her but I just like to be around her. there was an empty lawn chair next to her and I sat down. It was just us two out here. She was staring at the stars, I was staring at her. The way the moon light illuminated all of her features, the shine on her glossy lips, the glow on her face...wow. "Robin asked me something" my heart sunk at the break of the silence, did he actually ask her out?

I cleared my throat, "oh yeah? what did he say?" I crossed my fingers and braced myself when she opened her mouth to speak, "He asked me why we started fighting.. I didn't know what to say" I let out a sigh of relief. I thought about it, I don't know how we started fighting either, "I don't remember either" I said.

A gust of wind blew, it was already chilly to begin with, now it got colder. Lucy was sitting with her arms crossed and her legs crossed "Are you cold?" what kind of question is that? of course she is. she shook her head no and as if on cue, another gust of wind blew and she clenched her arms tighter. "scoot" I said. She listened. I moved onto her chair and took off my jean jacket, I wrapped it around her. I was now sitting on her right, I took my left arm and wrapped that around her too, pulling her in closer so we could be warmer.

She was so close to me. She smelt like cherries and cigarettes. She was staring at the stars, I was staring at her. "Whats wrong?" Lucy asked. The sudden break in the silence cause me to look away from her. "What do you mean?" I asked back. My heart was pounding against my chest it felt like it was going to explode.

She let out a giggle, "Your heart is beating like crazy" I looked down at her, she was already looking up at me. Wow. She looked breathtaking, the glow in her eyes the subtle freckles on her cheeks. I went for it.

"Lucy I like you.." I did it. I know I said earlier my heart was going to explode but now it really is. The way she looked at me I could tell she liked me back. She smiled "I like you too Vance" I used my right hand to reach under her chin and tilted it up towards me, and kissed her.
