Chapter 10.
IT WAS PAST 11 O’CLOCK that night… they finished eating two hours ago and Kaelanna was sleeping just beneath her. Alenna was wide awake for some reasons.
Maybe because she’s with her ex or maybe because the bed is too lumpy. Whatever the reason is… she can’t sleep. And she hates it.
She sits on her bed and looked at the window. There’s nothing to watch anyway. There are no people walking, nor birds talking–it’s just plain silence. But she found peace in it. The village is so simple, yet visually aesthetic in the eye. She never got to see this part of Germany. All she saw in Berlin was big cities, huge cars, and rich people wandering the streets with their phones sticking in their face.
If you ask 17-years-old she, where would she be in 15 years, she never would’ve answered “I’m a nurse in Germany”. Alenna never wanted to go to Germany, it was a fever dream for her. Being alone with her aunt and uncle that she isn’t that much comfortable to live in, and that she would also take care of their child? Nope. Not her dream. It was the break-up that drove her to do it. Alenna wanted space, and that it is the only place Kaelanna could never go–at least, at that time. They were never a good pair in everybody’s eyes, maybe because they argue a lot. And because, they are both ladies.
Alenna stared at her favorite thing at night, the moon. She started wandering if civilization is possible to happen at the moon, she would stay there forever. It was full moon, and it is a sight for her. Her eyes landed the window stool and saw a stargazing telescope. It was very small, measured around an inch or two.
She saw the moon up close through there, it was very beautiful. She stared at it for like a whole minute and started using it to see the sky. It wasn’t cloudy that night, and she saw some stars, twinkling. She even saw what she believes is planet Venus. “Red planet indeed…” she commented.
She was so busy sight-seeing that she didn’t notice Kaelanna woke up. “Keeping yourself busy?”
She jumped in shock. “Fuck!” and even held her chest. “You could’ve said at least a ‘hi!’ and not surprise me like that.”
Kaelanna looked at her with narrowed eyes. “Language.”
What? “Also, didn’t know you’re interested in astronomy.”
“You know that I like the moon.”
“Yeah… but clearly, you’re no longer looking at the moon, honey.” Kaelanna sat on her mattress, facing her. “The moon is up at north, and you were facing north-east. Which technically means, you are staring at something else.”
She looked at her confused, “so what are you indicating?”
“That you like astronomy and I didn’t know that.” Kaelanna stood up, putting her robe.
“Yeah, but I just said that I like the moon. Isn’t that astronomy?”
“Yes, it is honey. But liking the moon doesn’t mean, having interest in astronomy. You could like planet Earth, but never planet Jupiter because you’ll die there.” She explains. “You got me?”
Alenna wasn’t quite sure if she got her. “…sure.”“Do you just want an argument?”
Kaelanna snored in annoyance, “honey, I just woke up. And I don’t like arguments. You don’t like it either, especially with me. Admit it.” She then, left the room, proceeding to the kitchen table.
“I don’t like arguments when I’m wrong…” She said, underneath her breath. She put the telescope back in position and fix herself up.
I don’t think I know what time is it…
“Do you like, have any idea what time it is?” she asks Kaelanna whilst putting her hair up. “It’s 11:27 PM, honey.” Kaelanna answered. “By the way, do you eat kiwi?”
