chapter song:
Lonely Eyes - The Front Bottoms

James' eyes scanned the empty corridors for any sign of y/n. He had no luck. This person was quite fast, it seemed. He tried his best to think of where someone might hide in the vast castle.

Suddenly, a memory came to his mind, and he walked a long way through the castle while thinking of this memory.

Second Year

James had just escaped Filch who was looking for the culprits behind the green slime being tossed on every poor student and professor that walked in after a hot day on the court yard. James, Sirius, Peter and Remus had all ran their separate ways.

He found himself running up the stairs leading to the room where students weren't meant to be without a professor.

'Brilliant! No one will find me here!'

His eyes landed on a girl leaning on the railing, looking at the clouds in the sky, lost in thought while holding the necklace around her neck that had a gorgeous yet dainty emerald pendant.

He recognized her instantly. Y/n Gray. A quiet Slytherin girl in his year who he once was so close to for less than a day not too long before the moment they were currently in.

James hesitated for a moment, considering retreating to avoid any awkwardness. But curiosity got the better of him, and he needed to hide somewhere.

"Hey," he called out softly, not wanting to startle her.

Y/n turned quickly, her eyes wide with surprise. "What are you doing here?" she demanded, her tone more defensive than curious.

James shrugged, trying to appear casual. "Hiding from Filch. You?"

Her defenses did not go down although she had seemed less tense, turning back to the view. "Just... thinking. It's quiet up here."

He stepped closer, feeling an unexpected urge to join her. "Mind if I hide out here too? I just can't get caught."

Y/n glanced at him, seeming to weigh her options, before nodding slightly. "Just don't cause any trouble."

James grinned, feeling a bit of his usual confidence return. "Trouble? Me? Never."

The young y/n laughed at this. It's true, asking James Potter to not cause trouble was like asking Regulus Black to swim.

They stood in silence for a few moments, both lost in their own thoughts. James found his gaze drifting to the necklace she was holding.

"That's a nice necklace," he said, gesturing to the emerald pendant. "Family heirloom?"

Y/n's expression softened a bit. "Yes. It's been in my family for generations. It was my brother's." Her eyes closed for a moment longer than normal after mentioning her own brother.

James nodded, sensing the importance of the piece to her. "It suits you." He had heard mutters of the death of Elliot Gray, though it was a death kept under wraps.

Y/n looked at him, her eyes searching his face for sincerity. "Thanks," she uttered quietly.

They lapsed into silence again, the awkwardness slowly dissipating as they both found solace in the peaceful surroundings.

Eventually, the distant sound of footsteps broke the quiet, and James knew it was time to go. He turned to y/n, a small smile on his lips. "Guess I'd better get out of here before I get caught. Thanks for letting me stay."
