An unexpected request
The sun was already high when i arrived at the café. The familiar hum of morning customers filled the air, and i jumped straight into the rush, my mind still lingering on the events of the previous day. Leon’s sudden appearance and his help had been a pleasant surprise, but today was a new day, and there was work to be done.
By mid-morning, the café was bustling with activity. I was juggling orders when the doorbell chimed, and in walked Leon, looking as composed ae ever. I felt a rush of excitement but quickly focused on the task at hand.
“Hey, Saoirse,” he greeted, making his way to the counter.
“Good morning, Leon,” i replied, handing a tray of drinks to a customer. “Balik ka na naman? Mukhang nagugustuhan mo na rito ha.”
He chuckled, “Yeah, i guess you could say that. Need any help today?”
I hesitated for a moment but then nodded. “Sure, pero wala akong pambayad sayo.”
He laughed, “I’m not here for the money. Just want to help out.”
With Leon’s assistance, the workload seemed lighter. He had a natural charm that made customers smile and a willingness to learn that impressed me. We worked in sync, our movements becoming more coordinated with each passing hour.
As the lunch rush died down, we took a break at one of the back tables. I brought out a plate of noodles and shared it with Leon. “So, bakit ka nga ba nandito ulit?” i asked between the bites.
“I just find it... refreshing,” he said, choosing his words carefully. “I like seeing how people live and work. It’s different from what i’m used to.”
“Anong klaseng trabaho ba ang meron ka?” i pressed, curiousity getting the better of me.
He pauded, his expression thoughtful. “I’m involved in the family business. But sometimes, it feels like i need to step back and see the world from a different perspective.
“Hmm,” I murmured, sensing there was more to his story. “Well, it’s nice to have you around.”
“Thanks, Saoirse,” he said, his smile genuine. “It’s nice to be here.”
The afrernoon passed in a blur of activity, and by the time the evening rolled around, I was ready to call it a day. Leon had been a great help, and his presence made the day more enjoyable.
“Saoirse,” he said as we were cleaning up, “I was wondering... Can i have your number? Para mas madali tayong magkausap.”
I looked at him, surprised by his request, but i found myself smiling. “Sure, bakit hindi?” I said, taking out my phone and entering his number. “Here you go.”
“Thanks,” he said, looking relieved. “I’ll see you around, okay?”
“Yeah, see you,” i replied, watching him walk away. The streetlights cast along shadows on the pavement, and i felt a flutter of anticipation for what tomorrow may bring.
