The drive back to Seoul was peaceful, the car filled with the soothing sounds of the music playing softly from the radio. Wooyoung was sleeping peacefully in the passenger seat, exhausted from our trip and the activities of the past few days. My mother had made sure our last day was perfect, full of love and family moments, but the sleep was now catching up to him. Jisoo and Tae had been keeping us updated throughout the week about the kitten at home, ensuring he was fed and well-cared for until we returned.
As I tapped my fingers against the steering wheel in rhythm with the music, Wooyoung's phone buzzed suddenly, breaking the tranquility. Not wanting to disturb his sleep, I grabbed his phone and cut off the call. I then plugged my earphones into my own phone and called Tae back.
"San—thank God you called. We just went to check your house before you come back and—" Tae's voice was filled with nervous tension.
"What's up, Tae?" I asked, feeling a knot form in my stomach at his tone. There was a brief silence on the line that seemed to stretch on forever.
"Your house went up in flames," he said finally, the words hitting me like a physical blow.
I slammed on the brakes, the car skidding to a halt on the side of the road. The sudden stop jolted Wooyoung awake, his eyes wide with alarm.
"What's happening?" Wooyoung asked, his voice groggy but filled with concern.
I took a deep breath, trying to steady my racing heart. "Our house... it caught fire," I said, my voice trembling slightly. "Tae just told me."
Wooyoung's eyes widened in shock, the news shaking off any remnants of sleep. "Is everyone okay? What about the kitten?" he asked urgently.
I turned my attention back to the phone, waiting for Tae to explain further. "Is anyone hurt? What about our kitten?" I asked, my voice tight with worry.
Tae hesitated before responding. "No one was hurt. Jisoo and I made sure to get the kitten out. He's safe with us now," he said, his voice a mix of relief and lingering fear. "The fire department managed to put out the flames, but the damage to your house is extensive."
I felt a wave of relief wash over me at the news that no one was hurt and our kitten was safe. But the thought of our home, the place where we had built so many memories, being damaged was overwhelming.
"Thank you, Tae," I said, my voice thick with emotion. "Thank you for everything."
"We're just glad you're safe," Tae replied. "We'll stay here and help with whatever you need when you get back."
Wooyoung sat there staring out of the window, lost in thoughts, clearly processing everything Tae had said. I moved the car back onto the road, my mind whirling with the news we had just received. Without a word, I reached over and laced our fingers together, offering silent support.
