Four months had passed in a blur since we discovered Wooyoung was pregnant, and each day seemed to bring a new layer of joy and anticipation to our lives. Wooyoung was managing the pregnancy wonderfully, embracing each moment with a spirit that made me admire him even more, if that were possible. Little Han, ever the energetic and curious toddler, had taken to his impending role as a big brother with an earnestness that warmed everyone's hearts. He was often found chatting animatedly to Wooyoung's growing bump, much like he would to our cat, Byeol, who had also assumed the role of guardian by Wooyoung's side, snuggling close whenever he sat down to rest.
Today, as I prepared a refreshing glass of peach iced herbal tea from the kitchen counter, I paused for a moment to relish the peaceful domestic scene unfolding through the window leading to our garden. The late summer sun cast gentle, warm glows over everything, bathing our little sanctuary in golden light. I picked up the glass, the ice cubes clinking softly, and made my way outside.
Little Han was in the midst of a grand adventure involving his collection of toy cars and a makeshift sandbox we had set up under the shade of an old maple tree. The earnest concentration on his face as he maneuvered his toys brought a smile to mine; it was these simple, pure moments of childhood that often reminded me of the beauty in everyday life.
Wooyoung was nearby, gently swaying on the swing I had installed for us not long after we moved in. It had become his favorite spot, especially now as it provided a comforting motion that seemed to soothe the occasional discomforts of pregnancy. He had one hand resting on his bump, a look of contentment on his face as he enjoyed the warm weather and watched Han play.
As I approached, Wooyoung looked up and his face brightened with a smile. "You come bearing gifts," he teased lightly, nodding towards the glass in my hand.
"Only the best for you," I replied, handing him the tea. The herbal aroma mingled with the fresh air, creating a relaxing atmosphere.
He took a sip, his eyes closing for a moment in appreciation. "Perfect, thank you."
I settled down next to him on the swing, feeling it shift slightly under our combined weight. We swung gently, the rhythmic creaking of the chains mingling with the distant laughter of Han.
"This is nice," Wooyoung said, breaking the comfortable silence. "Just us, our little family."
"It is," I agreed, reaching over to squeeze his hand. "Everything feels just right."
As the shadows grew longer and the light softened, Han eventually tired of his sandbox adventures and came toddling over to where we sat, his face smeared with sand and a big grin plastered across his chubby cheeks. He clambered up onto the swing between us, his small body squirming to find a spot on Wooyoung's lap, instinctively seeking comfort and closeness after his play.
