THE SUDDEN sound of a knock at the door made Brooklyn jump.She froze ,the candlelight flickered with the vibration of the wood.Her heart hammered in her chest,each beat echoing through the quiet house.Finally,she took a deep breath and tiptoed to the door.The moment she swung the door open, her jaw dropped.Standing in the doorway was a figure she had never expected to see."Mrs Hart,what are you doing here ? Is everything alright?"
Lilly looked at her with a mix of concern and determination etched on her face."Brooklyn, may I come in?"she asked softly.Her voice, usually so warm and welcoming, now held a gravity that was unsettling.
Brooklyn stepped aside, allowing her to enter the dimly lit room.The scent of vanilla from her favorite candles filled the air,a stark contrast to the tension that now hung between them.
"Um-it's really good to see you"Brooklyn smiled nervously.
"I know this is unexpected,"she began,her words measured and deliberate."But I couldn't just sit by and do nothing."
Brooklyn remained standing,her back against the door for support."What do you mean?" she managed to ask,her voice a mere whisper.
"I don't know,what happened between you and Logan.And it's not my business"Mrs Hart took a deep breath and clasped her hands together in her lap. "But I know that there must be good reason,i saw the way you look at each other.And I know that Logan wouldn't hurt you purposefully, he is different with you Brooke and if there is so-"
Brooklyn felt a rush of emotions."I broke up with Logan"
"Did my husband made you do it ?"Lilly leaned forward,her eyes filled with a mom's concern. "know her can be convincing and rude but please don't listen to him"
"It wasn't Charles or Logan,it was just me" Brooklyn felt the weight of those words and she sighed."I wanted to break up with him"She lied,again .Why would she keep lying to people she loves?
"You two were in love"Lilly took a moment to consider her word. "Love is overrated"Brooke scoffed,trying to sound convincing.But she didn't even believe herself,so how could Lily?
"Logan didn't take the break up so well"Lilly replied,her gaze never wavering.
"Is he alright?"Brooke sat down opposite Mrs. Hart,her knees buckling slightly."Did something happen?" she whispered.
"He has been skipping school ,drinking and it seems like they might suspend him" Mrs Hart sighed. "Brooklyn if you care about him-just slightly,go talk to him please"
"I will see,what i can do"Brooke started,her voice wavering.
