AFTER EMILY returned from the hospital a few days later, the girls learned that Alison had been brutally hit and had been buried alive. Brooklyn noticed Ezra setting up a tenable for Hollis at the school's college fair. However, Jackie approached him first before anyone else did, before they even spoke.Though Brooklyn wasn't sure,Jackie most likely knew about them.Brooke wasn't jealous in the slightest as she observed Jackie briefly touching his chest.
She had nothing but hate for Jackie and knew that she would stop at nothing to win him back.A few minutes afterward, she was browsing college brochures at various tables while sporadically glancing at Jackie and Ezra. They were smiling at each other so closely that when Ezra saw her observing them,Brooklyn attempted to flee as soon as she saw him approaching.
"Miss Williams," he said, his voice carrying a hint of amusement as he took a step back from Jackie, "have you considered Hollis College for your journalism aspirations? We have an amazing program that I think would be a perfect match for your talents." His words hung in the air, and for a moment, it was as if only the two of them existed.
Jackie's gaze followed Brooklyn as she turned to leave, a knowing smile playing on her lips. It was then that Ezra's smile faded away. He could see the doubt and confusion in her eyes, and it pained him more than he cared to admit. Without a second thought, he called out, "Wait, are you mad at me?"
Brooklyn paused, her back to him, before slowly shaking her head. "No-no, I'm not mad at you," she said, her voice a gentle sigh. She turned to face him, her eyes searching his for any hint of deception. "I'm worried about us. I just feel like outside forces are kind of taking over."
Ezra's frown deepened. "Forces?" He repeated the word as if it were a riddle. He stepped closer, ignoring the curious glances from nearby students. "What forces, Brooklyn?"
"Jackie," she murmured, her gaze flicking back to the blonde. "It's just... she's so into you, and she doesn't know we're together." The words tasted bitter in her mouth, but she knew it was a conversation they needed to have.
Ezra's expression grew solemn as he nodded. "Please, let's talk about it," he said, reaching out to clasp her hand.
Brooklyn's eyes darted around the crowded gym, taking in the flurry of activity. "But not here," she said, gently untangling her fingers from his. The last thing she wanted was for their conversation to become the latest school gossip.
Ezra nodded in understanding, his grip loosening. "I'll be at the Hollis booth until six," he offered, his voice low and earnest. "If you want to talk in private, come by after the fair. I'll be there."
Brooklyn nodded, a small smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "I will," she promised, feeling a weight lift slightly from her chest. She turned to leave, her eyes catching Jackie's once more. The blonde was watching them with an expression that was unreadable—was it curiosity, suspicion, or something else entirely?
