DAYS WENT by very slowly after Hanna and Caleb's breakup ;usually,Hanna comes visit and the two get into another fight.Caleb walked around the house like lost puppy. For Brooke, leaving the house felt like a sort of deliverance Since he's gone,Ezra's apartment could be Since he's gone,Ezra's apartment could be the only place where she could find peace. It was a little scary to learn that Wilden lived in the same building. She had to check to see if he was around each time she entered the building.
After finding the key beneath the doormat Brooklyn entered the empty apartment.Spencer's voice crackled over the phone line, the words echoing through the quiet apartment. "Is Fitz there?"
Brooklyn paused, glancing around the empty space. The only response was the distant hum of the refrigerator. "No, he said he had some faculty things to take care of."
"So he is really trying for Hollis? "Spencer's voice grew more insistent, a hint of skepticism lacing her words.
Brooklyn chuckled, leaning against the kitchen counter, the coolness of the marble a stark contrast to the warmth of her cheeks. "Well yeah, he thinks this might work between us more," she replied, fidgeting with the edge of her t-shirt.
Spencer's tone softened. "And what do you think?" With curiosity, she asked.
Brooklyn took a deep breath, the aroma of old books and faintly stale coffee from the nearby stack of takeout cups filling her nostrils. "Honestly, Spence, I don't know," she murmured, her gaze lingering on the collection of fridge magnets from his past travels. "It won't work until the secret is out," she said, the words slipping from her lips with a heaviness that surprised even her.
Spencer sighed heavily on the other end of the line. "Tell me about secrets.I still don't know if Toby thinks i set him up with that sweater"
Brooklyn laughed, the sound echoing in the emptiness of the apartment. "What, you still didn't talk?" she teased, rolling her eyes at Spencer's predictable avoidance of confrontation.
"No, but he left me a massage saying to meet him after school," Spencer admitted, her voice carrying a mix of hope and nerves. "I have to go, my mom is calling," she added quickly, the sound of a second phone ringing in the background.
Brooklyn nodded, though Spencer couldn't see her. "Okay, talk to you later." She ended the call and slipped her phone into her pocket. The silence of the apartment was suddenly pierced by the sound of her laptop screen lighting up. She had accidentally hit the keyboard with her elbow. Her eyes widened as she saw Ezra's profile pop up on the screen. The most recent picture was of him with a beautiful woman, her hand adorned with an engagement ring that sparkled even in the dull light of the screen.
