"Auntie, why do I have to learn to make a whole chicken? I don't even like chicken." Brady complained while seasoning the chicken for dinner. She was picky when it came to her food and it annoyed Valerie.

Valerie was old school and wanted to teach Brady her methods of doing things in hopes she'd pass down to her own daughter someday.

"Well, you'll need to learn to cook, it's a basic life skill. Plus, the man you choose will appreciate a home-cooked meal. He'll appreciate that from you as his wife."

Brady scoffed and guffawed obnoxiously, "I'm never getting married. That's for the birds."

Valerie smiled and rose her eyebrows, "Never say never. You just might meet someone."

"Mmm. I don't think so Titi." She said skeptical. Brady was headstrong in her opinions, like her adults taught her; She was ten toes down on her life plan. She planned to graduate high school early, go straight to a university, and be successful in her future career. No thoughts of a man or family was included in her dream.

"Why are you so against it? You don't like any boys at school...no boyfriend?"

Valerie definitely considered Brady her daughter. Although she loved hearing about her school plans and was glad she was on the right path. But having been young once, she wanted to hear all about her excitements on boys as well.

Brady shook her head no, "Relationships just seem like too much. I see what my friends deal with, they just anything slide. I don't wanna be like that."

"Brady try to be a good friend and don't judge. Your friends are just trying to figure themselves out, like you. So, give some grace; you may deal with something they can't deal with either. No one wants to be around a judgy person. You'll understand when you're in love someday." Valerie schooled but of course, Brady never listened. She felt like she could prove Valerie wrong.

"Not gonna happen and all the boys at my school are dusty anyway."

"If you keep thinking that way, you're gonna fail. You'll want to get married and have a family someday."

"Well, who says I have to?" She countered.

They both looked at each other, Valerie looked at her amused by her strong-mindedness. Brady smiled and continued to season the chicken.
