It's about noon and the sun is shining right into my eyes, whilst the truck is going 70mph. I'm not even nervous anymore I'm excited more than anything.
As soon as I left that place I used to call home a weight was lifted off my shoulders.
I felt light and free, this is the start of my life."Earth to Cindy?" My dad said, waving his hand in my face with another hand on the wheel.
"Sorry just daydreaming, I am tired you know" I wasn't really tired I was just reflecting. "You know Cind, this is a real opportunity for you to reinvent yourself and work hard, I remember my college days... I'll never forget em'" I agreed and fell asleep, it was a long drive after-all.
Me and my Dad have always been close, he insisted he'd drive me to college. My Mom and I never really got along.
I feel the car stop and I open my eyes, "alright kiddo we're here"
We both start lifting boxes from the boot and we carry them upstairs to the student accommodations. Excitement surged as I turned the key to my dorm room, the door creaking open to reveal an empty space. I could picture where I'd put all my trinkets and posters.
We start decorating and unpacking."Cindy Solace?" A voice asked peeking through the door. It was one of many office ladies. "Yes?" I asked sort of concerned.
"Your roommate has made other arrangements so it looks like you're on your own until further notice" she smiles and slips back out closing the door behind her.Me and my dad shrug our shoulders and continue unpacking. We finish up and say our goodbyes. My dad sheds a tear and squeezes me tightly "Give me a ring if you need anything, and I mean anything Cind. I'm only one call away"
And just like that I'm alone. the empty twin bed could be used as a couch maybe? I don't know I guess It's kind of nice having my own space. I feel gross from what felt like the longest day ever so I grab my shower bag and stroll down the hall, making my way to the showers. It's surprisingly quiet for 8pm. A group of girls walk past me each giving me a smile which all equally seemed genuine.
I open the door but felt the door connect with something. "Fuck" a voice on the other side of the door winces. Of course I've managed to hit someone with a door on my first day.
I slowly open the door "I'm so sorry i didn't know it was a swinging door".
A girl stands up still covering her nose with her hands, auburn hair in a half up half down loose bun, about 5,9, wearing a black nirvana shirt and jeans, locks eyes with me
"it's fine".
A wave of familiarity washes over me. For fuck sake. I came to a college 8 hours away from my hometown and somehow someone that went to my high school is here. She squints her dark hazel eyes at me and glares. Im recognised. Great. I turn and head straight for the shower and hear footsteps leave.
Ellie was a few grades older than me in school and she was in my brother's classes. They despised each other and probably still do.
I let the warm water run down my face to ease my anxiety.I came to college hoping that nobody knew me or my past. I've been trying to move on from the mess with my ex back home. There's no doubt she knows about everything that went down. She was never the friendly type so I doubt she'd try and make conversation with me, well I hope not anyway.
