CINDYS POV

The words stung more than I'd expected. I paused, unsure how to respond, feeling like I was walking into a trap. I moved slowly, setting my things down.

"Wow... I was unaware I had a curfew now"

Ellie's gaze lifted, meeting mine with that same distant, guarded expression she'd been giving me all week. She didn't laugh. Didn't even crack a smile.

"Just saying," she muttered, her voice cold, almost disinterested.

"I was with Julia and Olivia," I added, more for the sake of filling the silence than anything.

Ellie gave a sarcastic scoff and rolled her eyes, her attention drifting back to her sketchbook. "Right," she said sarcastically, as if it didn't matter at all

"What the fuck is your issue Ellie?" I asked, my voice rising slightly. "You've been avoiding me all week"

Ellie's eyes snapped up from her sketchbook, narrowing as if I'd just accused her of something unforgivable. "I don't have an issue," she shot back, her voice defensive, her posture stiffening.

"You clearly do"

"Clearly I don't"

I blinked, caught off guard by the sudden hostility. "You're the one who's been avoiding me Ellie."

She stood up then, tossing her sketchbook onto the bed "I don't have to explain everything to you, why do you even care?"

The intensity in her voice hit me hard, and suddenly we were both standing there, facing off like opponents in a fight.

"Ellie, we live together. What am I supposed to do, just ignore you?"

"Yes actually"

Wow...

I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself as I spoke. "Look, I get it, Ellie. What happened between us was casual. That's fine. You don't need to be weird about it."

The words felt forced, like I was trying to convince both of us, but the moment they left my mouth, I saw the shift in her expression. Ellie's eyes darkened for a split second, her jaw tightening as if something I said hit a nerve. She crossed her arms, leaning back slightly, her posture defensive again.

"Casual... right." Her voice was bitter, colder than before. "Glad we're on the same page."

I swallowed hard, feeling a wave of hurt wash over me. Part of me had hoped it was something different, that maybe Ellie was struggling with more than just "casual," that maybe it meant something to her, too. But the way she said it, so dismissively, made it feel like I was wrong to even think that.

ELLIES POV

I looked away, my gaze fixed on the floor like I couldn't meet her eyes.

I was terrified. Scared of messing this up, scared of getting too close and breaking her heart, of ruining something before it even had the chance to be more. But instead of saying any of that, I built walls, acting distant and cold, hoping that pushing her away would protect me from the inevitable.
