Her voice was low but her face looked
entertained.
"Um... Sometimes" I responded trying to conceal the fact she caught me completely off guard.
"Didn't know you studied photography either" Her head tilted, pointing to my digital camera around my neck.
"You don't know a lot about me" My voice was unintentionally toneless.
"Hmm" She hummed, hiding a smile
"Were you eavesdropping?" I questioned playfully
"Oh i'd never"
I couldn't believe we were actually having some banter and a lively conversation that wasn't full of dead greetings. I chuckled and gave a sarcastic nod.
She cleared her throat. Perhaps she felt the tension too. We were both now hiding a smile.

"Well, me and Jesse were gonna smoke if you'd like to join" She slid into her pocket and revealed a perfectly rolled joint and started walking towards everyone else alongside me.
"Sure" I said, trying my very best to sound chill.
I didn't exactly plan on getting embarrassingly high but at-least the conversation sobered me up a bit.
As we stroll towards everyone else I spot Julia sitting with Jesse and the rest of Ellie's friends.
We sit down on the huge blanket next to the fire and Julia winks at me whilst Jesse has his arm around her. I casually introduce Julia to Ellie and vice versa.
She held the joint with her lips as she brought the lighter up to light it, inhaling before blowing the smoke out and passing it to Jesse then to Julia and then to me. Seeing her smoke was strangely attractive. We rotated the joint until it was done and I felt it straight away. We talked about college and our hometowns as none of us were originally from California.

"I didn't know you two knew each other" Jesse pointed out looking curious.
Ellie and I glanced at each other "Yeah, well we knew of each other, but thats just small towns for you I guess" I said.
"Small towns man... fuck am I glad to be out of that place. Everyone knew everyones business" Ellie said as she gave me a look
What was that look? Was she trying to insinuate something? What was she trying to say? I sure as hell hope she didn't mean the whole me and Kat debacle. I tried to brush it off.

Ellie and I continued talking about what it was like to grow up in a midwest small town as Jesse and Julia were intrigued about how different our environment was compared to theirs during adolescence. I learnt that Jesse was from Florida and Julia has always lived in San Francisco. As the night progressed the gathering gradually dispersed and people started to head home as it was getting late.

"You wanna ride home?" Ellie asked
I was relieved she asked because Dina and the others had already left and Julia wanted to stay a little longer alone with Jesse. So I was basically stranded if she didn't offer a ride.
"Sure I'm ready to leave when you are"
Ellie places her hand on my shoulder and nods her head in the direction of the car park "Lets go". As much as I hate to admit it, her touch felt good. Maybe I've been touch starved for too long that even a brief moment of warmth on my shoulder blade from the palm of her hand felt comforting and warm.

We got up and made our way to her car in silence. She drove a dark green 1970 Ford F-100 and it absolutely suit her. "Nice truck" I say. She didn't say anything back, instead she shot me a devious smile which made me regret complimenting at all, I didn't want to feed into her ego and fuck knows how many other girls have said the exact same thing.
I jump up into the passenger seat and buckle myself in.

She sat back in her seat with her legs spread out, one hand on the wheel and the other on the gearstick.
"Sooo..." She said as she started driving out of the area.
"So?" I questioned, sort of confused
"You haven't yet told me why you decided to come to a college so far from home"
"Neither have you" I knew i was sort of deflecting and changing the subject but i genuinely didn't want to talk about it, even though it was an inevitable topic that would come up sooner or later if we were gonna be friends.

"Yes I did, I told you i've wanted to move away forever" She corrected me. I could tell she loved being right, proving me wrong. What an asshole. She wound down the window and rested her slender arm along the car doorframe, The moonlight shone onto her skin making her tattoos seem even darker and her skin more defined. I stand corrected, A hot asshole.
I lift my head up from fidgeting with the rings on my fingers to her facial expression awaiting an answer. fuck. I awkwardly clear my throat. "I just don't have the greatest of memories back home and I've always dreamt of being a professional photographer some day so... yeah i guess that pretty much sums it up" That definitely does not sum it up. I basically couldn't live in the same state as my ex without agony, I couldn't flourish stuck back home or even be my own person.

ELLIE'S POV

I got the sense that maybe it was a sore subject from the way she reacted, her voice seemed hesitant and I didn't wanna push her information she didn't want to tell.
"It's a shithole anyway, I'll never go back" I assured, trying to change the subject slightly

She let out a giggle "You're not wrong"
I glanced at her and chuckled and fuck is she a sight for sore eyes. Cindy was beautiful. I think many girls here at college are hot and I wouldn't really think twice about fucking them but Cindy was mesmerising.

I don't know what it is about her; maybe it's her brown dark curls and eyes or her curvy figure or maybe even her dimples when she smiles. She's a genuine distraction from my driving.
