You were in your office at Public Safety, filling up some forums. Suddenly, there was a knock on your door. You lifted your gaze up from the papers on your desk and towards the door. "Come in" you raised your voice a bit. The door opened and trough it emerged Makima's figure, a small smile over her face
"Hello Y/N" she said in a monotone voice. You got up from your seat and greeted her "Hello miss Makima. Is there anything you need?"
"Yes, actually" she confirmed and paused before speaking up again "I've got reports of devil activity three blocks from here. Im not sure what kind of devil is in question, but i'll need you to investigate the area, and hunt the devil down if possible. I already sent out Denji and he'll be waiting for you at the designated location."
You gave her a small nod, before taking your weapon that was leaned against the desk "Alright."

Makima nodded, seeming pleased, her smile still on her face "Great. Im counting on you." She said before turning and exiting trough the doorframe. A few moments later after grabbing your own equipment and necessities, you exited your office, ready to hunt down the devil.

----------------------------------------
Where did it all start, you're probably wondering. How did you end up here, working at a job that's practically suicidal?

Well, it all started many years ago. When you were just 13. You used to have a family. Your mother, father, brother and sister. But one night, all of them got slaughtered by a devil. At least, that's what you thought. And well, you never knew which devil did such a thing. Nor did anyone from the pro's bothered in investigating. And it made you agitated. Even you tried seeking for answers, asking around, stealing some documents and files from police stations, but nothing. Apparently, no one knew a thing. And you never got a single lead towards the devil that was responsible for the death of your family. But you never seemed to have given up, and you were eager to find out.

You returned to your home. It was around 9pm at night, and you were in the neighbourhood, playing with a childhood friend. You opened the door and as soon as you were gonna speak up to announce that you got home, in less than a second, you got completely mortified at the sight of your parents' dead bodies that were swimming in their own pool of blood across the hallway. Blood was splattered all over the walls, and you looked around as if you couldnt believe it. You saw your decapitated younger sister laying down in the kitchen, her head in the corner of the room, and her body was even wide open, her organs were basically a mush, pieces of her bowels almost everywhere. Her liver was taken out and it layed by the kitchen table. Her heart was missing, and you immidiately assumed the devil ate it. At the sight you collapsed onto the ground and threw up, choking slightly on your own barf. You felt your tears choke your throat a moment after, not having any air to breathe in. "Its all just a nightmare" you convinced yourself. You begged to wake up from this dream but, nothing. Everything was as real as it was. It wasn't long until you herd footsteps behind you. You turned around in fear, thinking it was a devil, but... It was your older brother (he was 14). Your breath hitched at the sight of him, he was drenched in blood. He didnt seem to be wounded, rather just filthy from someone elses blood. Tho he certainly was horrified as much as you were. You didnt say a word- you just stood up and hugged him tightly, shaking in his embrace. He hugged you back almost possessively, as if he was scared to let go.

"Im sorry i... I could've done something about the devil but... I-i was scared..." He mouthed weakily, tears emerging from his eyes and running down his cheeks.
You looked up at him, your eyes still moisture from your tears. You reached out to brush his own away
"Dont be sorry... Its not your fault... I-im glad that y-you're alive.." your voice cracked, and despite the enormous amount of sadness and grief that washed over you, you felt a tad of relief when you knew that atleast your brother was alright.
All he replied was with a small nod, silently glancing over at the dead bodies once more "We should call the police.. I dont think we should just sit here and do nothing.." he finally said
You gave him a small nod, agreeing to his idea "Yeah, lets do that."

And soon after, the police came. They cleared out the bodies and took them away, and it took everything you had just so you could hold back another stream of tears. Your brother however, seemed to not show any emotions whatsoever. He just looked at the policemen taking the bodies of your family away with a blank expression. Its as if someone took an eraser and erased every trace of humanity he had in him in that moment. You noticed that and you gave him a soft hug, and he reciprocated, but weakly.

[...]

Some time has passed and you two grew up together alone. You still lived in the same house in which the rest of your family was slaughtered. And neither of you liked the idea at first, but you didnt have another option. You both had nowhere else to go, so you were bound to stay here. Your brother was usually distant, and its not like he didnt care, its just as if he was in his own world all the time. Sometimes you considered him a walking corpse from how he acted, and it concerned you alot. The neighbors were concerned for your well-being ever since, so they'd oftenly do their best to help you and your brother in any way possible; they brought you food, sometimes even new pairs of clothes. And you've always been grateful for how they treated you both, but you never had the chance to repay them. But later on, one after another, the neighbors either went missing, or got killed. All of your childhood friends got it coming too, and neither you nor your brother knew what was going on, but it gave you an extra reason to be agitated, and you deffinitly suspected the same devil that killed your family. You went to every crime scene you could, but there was never a trace of any devil activity whatsoever. And it made you even more frustrated. You spent day after day trying to uncover the identity of the creature that took away almost everything you held dear, and even if there was no avail, you never gave up.

Its now been 3 years since your family died, and ever since your brother completely changed. I mean, who wouldnt? You used to be lively as ever, but now, its as if someone bind you to a pair of chains and your happiness has been taken away. You havent smiled even once. Neither did your brother. You two would oftenly cuddle like a way of comforting eachother, and that would be the only time you two would feel truly safe and content. You really wished things were the way they used to be, but it was hard to make that a reality. Your mentality changed completely, and there wasnt a way you could bring the old you back anytime soon. Same goes to your brother.
He looked around for a job non-stop, since you both didnt have much money. You had some savings that were left behind by your parents, but that money started to disapear slowly but surely. He didnt have any success whatsoever, and even you tried to find a job, but still no avail. And that was until your brother found out for something that was called 'Public Safety' . Apparently it was a group of people that worked on exterminating devils around the city. And despite him not knowing anything about devils, nor did he have any skills whatsoever, he decided to try and sign up anyways. He had alot of trouble getting in, and after another year, he trained hard, and at the age of 19, he got the job at long last and became a devil hunter. And ever since, he was able to earn enough money for the both of you to live normally. And after a few months of him working as a devil hunter, you also got interested in becoming one. You told him about your wish to help him, but he immidiately told you no. He didnt want to get you caught up into devil hunting, since it was highly dangerous. You actually felt dissapointed and sort of useless, but despite that, you decided to work hard. You secretly trained every day, improving your agility, speed, and swordsmanship skills. You were able to find an old katana in your shed, and you remember your dad used to tell you about it- and apparently, it was once used by your grandpa. It was a bit rusty, but it was still as sharp as ever. You practiced with it, and after 4 months of constant training, you were ready. You then secretly went one day to apply yourself for the job, hoping you'll get it. As you were waiting for someone to take you in an accept you for a job interview, you noticed a woman with dark pink hair that was braided enter the room. Her yellow eyes immidiately darted to you. You got scared at first, since she looked like she could kill you any second if she wanted to. But then a small smile beamed over her face, which made you slightly confused yet relieved.
"You must be Y/N right?" She asked softly as she walked up to you, her expression calm, despite the hint of danger lingering in her eyes.
"Y-Yes that's me. Are you here to interview me?"
Makima cocked her head to the side ever so slightly "Well, not exactly. I do know that a person was supposed to come here today for the job interview. And since i never saw you before, i assumed you were that person. But, while we're at it, since nobody seems to be arriving to interview you anytime soon, i might aswell take you in myself."
"Um... Okay?" You looked at her confused, not even aware of her identity
"I'm Makima by the way. The head of Public Safety."
Your eyes widened slightly as you herd her title, intrigued that the boss of the place herself was talking to you right now.
