Public Safety | Chapter 2

"I'm Makima by the way. The head of Public Safety."
Your eyes widened slightly as you herd her title, intrigued that the boss of the place herself was talking to you right now.
"I- Im so sorry ma'am, i didn't know!" You immidiately bowed your head, as a sign of respect.
Makima couldn't help but chuckle, waving her hand reassuringly "No worries, its alright. Now, follow me." She said as she motioned you to walk with her,and you nodded, following her until you enter what seemed to be her office. She then sat down in her chair at her desk, and you sat on a chair opposite of it. She then rummaged trough the drawers until she found a handful of papers and taking them out on her desk.

"So, tell me Y/N, why is it that you want to become a devil hunter? Its very unusual that people come here out of their free will to apply for the job. Usually im the one that accidently happens to find a worthy client." She looked at you curiously as she rested her hand on her cheek, the same small innocent smile plastered onto her scary face.
You fiddled with the hem of your shirt slightly as you looked for the right words to use
"Well, its... A long story..." You said and looked away
You herd Makima exhale and then she spoke up "Well, long or short, i'd like to hear it. So you can go on and tell me."
You looked back at her and gave her a small nod, and then you started talking. From how normal your life was, all the way to the point your family got killed. And the aftermath of it. Despite how much you talked, Makima seemed to be actually invested in your life story. And as soon as you mentioned your older brother B/N, her eyebrows raised up a bit

"B/N? He's the newest devil hunter that got employed just a few months ago, right?" She asked as a way of confirming
"Uh.. yeah. He's the one. I wanted to join because i wanted to help him earn some extra money, aswell as.. for.. well.. personal reasons.."
Makima tilted her head to the side, like a curious child "Let me guess, so you could find some info on the devil that killed your family?"
Your eyes widened a whole centimeter as she said that sentence, you were almost scared from how she guessed the reason. "How do you know..?"

Makima chuckled at your reaction. "Well, two reasons. One, it was pretty obvious what your intentions are based off of what you told me, and two, i have another dog that has a simillar goal as you." She said in her usual calm voice

Your eyes widened slightly "D-Dog?"

She nodded and hummed in approval "Exactly. Everyone here at Public Safety is a pet of mine. They kill devils for me, and in exchange, they get special treatment."

You were weirded out by the way she formulated it, but something about her gaze made you not question her explanation, despite how much you wanted to "So.. ill be getting special treatment aswell?.."

She nodded "If you prove to be loyal and worthy that is. If you ever decide to quit the job, then ill have no choice but to respect your desicion. But im sure that'll never happen, right?" She looked at you expectantly, awaiting your answer

"Yes ma'am."

"Good. Now then, are you perhaps, contracted with a devil?"

You blinked a few times before answering "What do you mean by that?.."

"Well, humans make contracts with devils in order to exterminate them. Every Public Safety hunter has a contract with one. And i suggest you make a deal with one as soon as possible."

"I- Yeah i will..."

"Well.. based off of your interview, i think your reasons are strong enough for me to let you become a devil hunter. As for your combat skills, ill leave that to your future mentor."
Your expression lightened drastically, but however, you didnt feel glad enough to even put on a smile "Really? I-.. thank you so much miss!" You bowed your head again
"However, there's one more thing" She paused
"Huh?" You looked at her curiously

"Ill assign you to a division that i think you'll fit in pretty well. And well, since every new devil hunter gets their own mentor, as i mentioned, ill be assigning you to a man named Kishibe. He's the captain of the Special 4th Division ill be assigning you to. He will make sure that your physical condition is in great shape, and ill ask him about your progress, in order to truly know whether you're worthy of become a Devil Hunter or not."
You nodded at Makima's words, a bit curious about what kind of people you'll be paired up with in your division, and what kind of mentor the Kishibe guy will turn out to be.
"Alright, got it. Thank you so much miss!"
Makima smiled, nodding slightly "Its my pleasure. Now then.." she then got up and went over a nearby table, on which there was some clothes stacked, and they all looked the same. She then offered you some from the pile
"This is the uniform you'll be wearing here at Public Safety. You'll start your work first thing tomorrow. Ill arrange a meeting so you can meet the members of your division. Im sure you'll fit in really well."
You accepted the clothes she gave you, and you bowed your head once more "Thank you once more, ill make sure to work hard."

Makima couldnt help but be rather pleased by how polite and promising you are. "Of course. You are dissmisssed. Ill see you tomorrow, then."
You gave her one last nod "Alright." You then silently exited her office, closing the door behind you.

Makima sighed in content, going back to her chair and sitting down on it. She then stared at a random spot in the room for a couple of minutes, in complete silence. She then rummaged trough the numerous papers over her desk, until she ran into a paper that happened to be Aki's devil hunter profile. She couldnt help but smile ever so slightly "Looks like you found yourself a match, Aki.." she said softly to herself and smiled, but her smile didnt look as innocent like before. She then settled the paper down, and exited her office.

After a nice walk, you finally got back home. It was silent in the house so you thought your brother hasn't returned yet. Perfect opportunity for you to hide the clothes you recieved from miss Makima. There was no way in hell you'd let him see the uniform you got, because then he'll know you're working for Public Safety. And just as you went past the living room, he emerged out of the bathroom and looked down at you "Where have you been?" He asked sternly, making you jump back and accidently drop the clothes that you got on the floor. He immidiately noticed the clothes and looked down at them, then back at you "What's this?.. Wait, dont tell me you actually joined Public Safety..." He narrowed his eyes slightly at you, causing you to get chills everywhere. You quickly crouched down and picked the clothes up.
"I.... I did..." You murmured, looking away. He stayed silent for a few seconds before bursting out "What the hell!? I specifically told you to not stick your nose into that kind of job! Do you want to get yourself killed or something!? How the heck did you even manage to join huh!?"
You stayed silent for a few seconds, before replying "I... I secretly trained for 4 months while you were at work, okay!? I worked on improving and im much stronger than i used to be! The boss of Public Safety herself interviewed me and accepted me!" You said in defense, hoping that'll do anything good.
Your brother's eyes widened slightly, as he wasn't expecting that. The anger slowly started to dissipate, and was replaced by pure surprise "Wait, really?.."
"Yeah! Look i know that maybe im not up for the job but, i worked hard to improve! I want to find out more about the devil that... Killed our family.." you lowered your head, now looking at the ground. His expression seemed to have softened, and so did his voice "I know, i want to know aswell but... You know damn well the job is dangerous. I just dont want yourself getting killed.." he then put a hand on your shoulder. You looked up at him "I wont get killed. I promise, ill take care of myself. Just please, let me have this job. Its not like they'll accept me anywhere else."
He went silent for a few seconds and sighed heavily, before letting go of your shoulder "Fine. But ill keep my eye on you."
Your eyes sparkled in relief and you nodded eagerly, without smiling at all "Alright."

You both then ate your dinner and went to bed. You stayed awake though, wondering about how it will be on your first day of the job tomorrow. And you suddenly remembered the guy Makima mentioned - the one that seemingly has a simillar goal as you. You couldnt help but wonder who it might be, and if you might end up in the same division as him. A lot of questions were running trough your head unanswered, but at some point you finally fell asleep, getting the rest you'll need for the upcoming day.
