Summer O'Connor hated a lot of things. She hated the rain. She hated the colour purple. She hated musicals. She hated capris. She hated sports. The list was truly never ending. But, at this very moment in time, there was nothing else she hated more than her ex boyfriend. Who had spouted some nonsense about not being good for her before dumping her over text.

Even reading over the texts had her practically seething. Which is why she had opted out on lunch in the cafeteria with all her friends, who she didn't necessarily like anyways. None of them really cared for her, more so her money and her opinion. The only person who ever really saw passed the mean facade and shallow comments Summer spoke was Robby Keene, but not even he mattered anymore.

Her sadness over the break up had lasted all of a week before it was replaced with eye twitching rage.

Summer must have drafted four angry paragraphs to her ex boyfriend this morning alone, still not having replied to his down right depressing break up text. However, she couldn't put into words how hurt she was feeling, how upset he had made her.

"Excuse me?" A small voice sounded from the other side of the girl's locker. Summer groaned, deleting her angry message before slamming her locker door shut and glaring at the unfamiliar boy who had spoken to her.

"I need some help."

Summer scrutinised the boy, starting with his ugly shirt and flannel and ending with his shoes and mismatched socks. "Sorry, I don't do charity cases." Summer scoffed before slipping her phone into her handbag and heading into the direction of her English class.

"N-No, I'm not looking for charity." The boy stuttered as he raced after her, falling into step beside her. Summer took one look around the hallway, thanking the Gods above that everyone was still eating lunch in the cafeteria and she didn't have to be seen with the tragedy beside her. "I just need help finding my English classroom. I'm new here, and I'm just a bit lost."

"Shock horror." Summer bit out, rolling her eyes as she ripped the schedule the boy was holding out to her from his hand.

"I'm Miguel, by the way." The boy smiled as he watched the pretty, but incredibly rude, girl read over his timetable.

"And I didn't ask." Summer shot back. Miguel let out a small, disappointed squeak before nodding his head and glancing down at the floor. Summer tried not to fall for the kicked puppy facade, but she couldn't help but feel bad for the boy. He clearly didn't know how things worked around here.

"Ugh," the girl groaned before halting in her footsteps and turning to face the boy. "I'm Summer, and I'm just in a bad mood, hence the aggression."

Miguel's dark eyes flickered up from his feet, lightening up as he smiled at the girl. "Are you okay?"

Summer narrowed her eyes at the boy, wondering what it was about her that gave off the impression that she wanted to tell this random stranger what was happening in her life. But she decided that it didn't quite matter much, because after today, Miguel would find his band of nerds and stick to them, and he would never speak to her again.

"No, my boyfriend broke up with me for no apparent reason, and he did it over text." Summer spoke hurriedly before turning to walk down the hallway once more. Miguel followed close behind, "what's wrong with breaking up with you over text?"

"Um, everything. That's like rule numero uno." Summer scoffed, rolling her eyes at the boys lack of social knowledge. Miguel simply nodded, storing the information in his brain in case he ever had to use it later down the line. "Well, he seems like a dick. I'm sorry he broke up with you."

Summer glanced at the boy beside her, quickly looking away and nodding her head. Miguel seemed sweet, too bad he would never fit into Summer's life. She was a stereotypical popular girl, and being seen with someone of the likes of Miguel was enough to cause a serious blow to her reputation, let alone actually befriending the boy.

Summer finally handed the boy back his timetable, "you're in my English class."

Summer didn't actually mind her English class. It was advanced, so it was full of kids she didn't talk to, but she didn't mind. None of them actually even spared her a glance, all too busy preparing themselves for their lives after high school which would exceed far past the limits of peaking in high school like the majority of kids in the Valley.

"Cool." Miguel breathed out, palming the straps of his backpack as he followed beside the girl. "Are you going to the Halloween dance tomorrow?"

Obviously Summer was going. The girl had to bite her tongue to not make a sarcastic comment in retaliation, telling herself that the boy who reminded her of a lost puppy was new and didn't know who she was. The girl merely hummed in response, digging through her purse and pulling out a tube of lipgloss.

"Me too! I'll see you then, I'm going as a superhero."

Summer stopped listening a soon as she replied to his original question, focusing as she applied a sheer coat of her pink tinted lipgloss, which smelt like strawberries and tasted sweet on her tongue.

"What are you going as?"

"Jennifer Check." Summer responded, slipping her lipgloss back into her bag.

"Who?" The boy beside her asked, causing a gasp to leave Summer's mouth as she halted in her footsteps once more to stare at the boy with open mouthed shock. "You haven't watched Jennifer's Body?"

Miguel shook his head innocently, "what's it about?"

"A girl who eats boys."

The Halloween Dance had been a total bust. Summer's friends were annoying her and the girl couldn't even force Robby to come pick her up like she usually did when she was in a situation she didn't want to be in. So, the girl was forced to roam the halls until the dance was over.

What she didn't expect to see was her ex boyfriend's dead beat father standing in the middle of the hallway, peering sadly into an old casing full of trophies.

"Mr Lawrence?" The girl spoke out, confusion lacing her tone as she looked the man up and down.

The man's eyes snapped over to the girl, widening at the sight of her, "Summer? What are you doing here?"

"I go to school here, what's your excuse?" The girl snapped back, crossing her arms as she glared at the older blonde man in front of her.

"Always the charmer." He scoffed.

Summer opened her mouth to retort, but was cut off by the door beside her and Johnny opening. She heard the obnoxious voice of Kyler and his friends before she saw them, rolling her eyes as they exited the boys locker room, all cheering Kyler on for whatever despicable thing he had accomplished now.

Whatever they had said must have peaked Johnny's interest, however, as he was quick to enter the room they had all hastily left. Summer raised a singular eyebrow before following closely behind the man.

A gasp escaped her lips as she entered the room and came face to face with an unconscious Miguel, dressed clad in his skeleton costume and with blood coating his face.

"Oh my god." She spoke under her breath as she watched Johnny pick the boy up. Confusion coated her features at the sight of Johnny's distressed face, but Summer couldn't find it in herself to move as she watched the man carry the boy out of the locker room.
