THE SUN had settled down, roaring infected behind the wind in the air, catching up with Boyd while sprinting towards the end of the forest, Boyd Sawyer was clutching the tiny girl known as his daughter in his arms. It was already done. The bite mark on his leg was making him weaker by the minute, and he was limping his way towards the light.

Lights shining in the distance. It was a city. A tiny city that'll take care of his little girl, give her the life that—a life that he took away from her the moment he laid eyes on her.

Her.

Devon Sawyer.

He wished to have a son. A son to survive. To take charge. But no. A weakness. A problem. Nothing. Just uselessness...now, he was a problem and uselessness...

Devon cried in her father's arms. Wishing this waking nightmare would end. She could hear the moans and screeching from the monsters from hell over her father's shoulder. The little girl quickly shut her eyes, trying to think of...of... what? Nothing. There was nothing that could make her feel better. Devon prayed to God every night—that neither she or her father would be taken away by the monsters. But for so long, she knew. She knew what that mark meant. Her father will soon be gone forever. Nowhere to be seen, but now only in her memories.

Sixteen years old, a woman—Born into the world of fungus, turning people into infected, filthy, sick like animals. Those scary stories Boyd used to tell Devon every night were real. There was a whole different world behind —or underneath—the place where the girl stayed throughout her entire life. Now she was heading towards a town with people who would shoot her father within seconds of knowing if he was infected.

"D-Dad, how much longer?" Devon whines, clenching onto his jacket.

Boyd didn't say anything. Tears filled his eyes. He could've been a better father. His only daughter was in his arms. As the last members of the Sawyer bloodline, he felt ashamed about how he treated Devon in the past. Treating her as if she were a man instead of a woman.

Up ahead, it was a huge gate. That was their exit. Or was it just the beginning of their new lives?

There were shots heading Boyd's way, holding tight on his daughter's head and shielding her from the bullets. The men on top of the gate weren't targeting Boyd. They were making a path for the two. Dead infected lay down behind Devon and Boyd until their last stop—the gate.

Three different people walked out, two of them armed. One being a woman with blonde hair.

Boyd breathed out in relief, the bite spreading with each word he uttered. "Take her. Keep her safe." Dropping his daughter into the dry dirt.

She coughed and quickly brushed off her jeans, which barely fit around her waist. "No—dad!" Devon cried, reaching out for him, but he only backed away. "I'm sorry, sweetheart."

Devon felt her world crashing down. He was an asshole. Called her a him. He treated her like a son, but she still had love for him. "Are any of you infected?" The woman asked, and the two men behind her pointed their guns at the unknowns.

Devon shook her head sadly, her eyes dropping to the dirt, her boots playing and kicking at the rocks—her father, on the other hand, took a step back, raising his hands in the arm. "I am!"

Shots were fired.

The teenager whipped her head around, tears spilling at the sight of her father being shot. There wasn't any joking around when it came to this world. Devon didn't scream. Devon didn't even bat an eye. She stared at the puddle of blood and dropped to her knees.
