**2 WEEKS LATER**
**STEVE POV**
I was getting ready to leave my room one morning when my cellphone rang on the bed. I saw it was Mary and smiled.
"Hey, everything okay?" I asked.
"Oh yeah everything is fine. I was calling to see what you planned for Cali's birthday today?" Mary questioned.
I stood, my shirt halfway buttoned, stunned.
"Today is her birthday?!" I panicked.
"Yeah, she never said?" Mary asked.
"No! She never mentioned anything. I mean I know she took the day off and was going to go surfing and then shopping with Rachel later."
"Well, it's her birthday Steve! I mean can you at least get her a cupcake or something?" Mary asked annoyed at her brother, even though he didn't know.
"I'll figure out something." I said. "What did you usually do?" I asked.
"Dinner out somewhere, wine, she isn't big into parties..." Mary said.
"Okay I will think of something." I said.
"Okay, also she will have a package arriving from me later. Make sure she gets it." Mary said.
"I will, should I get her anything?" I asked.
"Don't feel obligated but if you do, she loves reading. She would read for a living if she made money doing so." Mary chuckled. "Make it a classic though. In fact, she left her copy of Pride and Prejudice here when she left..."
"Okay thanks Mary." I smiled. "Talk soon." I said and we hung up.
I sighed and wondered why Cali was going to go all day and not say anything. She just basically said she had the day off and was surfing this morning and shopping in the afternoon.
I finished getting ready, walked downstairs to find Cali coming back inside in her sports bra and yoga pants doing her morning workout.
"Good morning." She smiled at me sweetly.
"Good morning." I smiled back. I then grinned a broader smile as she got a bottle of water from the fridge. "Happy Birthday." I simply said pouring my coffee. She sighed and turned to look at me.
"Mary called you?" Cali asked and I nodded.
"She did, why didn't you tell me?" I asked as Cali shrugged.
"I don't usually celebrate. I mean 2 weeks until Christmas and then a week later is New Year and then...so yeah, I don't usually tell people." Cali said.
I knew the part she trailed off on was her dad. She never talked about it, she never wanted to, so I never pushed.
"Well if you don't mind, I would love to take you out to dinner tonight." I said. I then panicked thinking she would over think it, "Maybe bring the team...just do a small celebration."
She smiled and gave a small nod, "Yeah. That would be amazing."
"Perfect I will text you a time, place and all the details later." I said.
"Sounds great." Cali smiled, she then looked at the clock, "You're going to be late."
I looked to double check the time and almost choked on the drink of coffee I took, then put the cup in the sink.
"Happy Birthday! Dinner, tonight!" I yelled as I rushed out of the house hearing Cali laugh as I did.
