"Oh, poor Anne." Diana just truthfully informed Everly on what happed when she left with Gilbert a few days ago. "No wonder she hasn't been at school. If she was sick the girl would've been better by now," Everly whispered to Diana.

Apparently Josie and Anne got in to a heated argued yesterday and when Mr. Phillips heard, he forced Anne to apologize in front of everyone too, not only Josie but the whole class.

Claiming, the whole situation was Anne's fault to begin with. Anne refused and ended up walking out class, feeling ashamed and worse of all embarrassed.

Everly felt guilty. From what she was told had been nothing but a lie. Anne was not sick, the fact of Anne had been going through something so horrible.

"Ruby and I are going to deliver her books after class. Join us, Eve. I'm sure Anna would be happy to see you." Diana smiled, happily, "She does admire your accent."

Everly returned the smile, "Quiet a lot. I fear one day Anne might try to steal my voice box," She joked.

"I don't doubt that."

"Rubys going?"

"Oh right, I must've forgot. Ruby told me to tell you that she wants to be friends again. So does Josie."

                                             ***

Everly grabbed her book bag and hat, once done she patiently waited for Diana and Ruby to finish Mr. Phillips exit ticket.

"I see you've finished, rather early." Gilbert brushed past Everly, grabbing his things.

"Indeed I have." The blonde watched him place his hat on his head and fix the button of his shirt. Something was different about Gilbert. He wasn't in his happy and playful mood.

She noticed it yesterday but thought she had been overthinking it, but now it was clear as daylight, something is upsetting him. His faint eye bags forming below his eyes gave it away.

"How are you've been?" Everly asked the boy, without thinking.

Gilbert glanced at her while adjusting his scarf, "Good." He vaguely said, "And you?"

"Good." The girl nodded her head.

"That's..."

"-Good," Everly finished his sentence before moving a little closer, "Is there something bothering you? If so I may be of help. I'm not the strongest nor the richest but I ensure you, I'll listen, Gilbert."

He broke eye contact, his eyes falling towards the ground, "No," He dismissed it, "But If I ever need someone to listen to my troubles, I'll call you."

Everly could spot a forced smile from a mile away, so to see Gilbert visibly forcing a smile and lying to the girl made her worry.

"You ready?" Asked Diana.

"Yeah." Everly muttered as she watched Gilbert peacefully walk away, with his back facing the girl.

The three girls walked quietly together through the gates of green gables. It was a lovely sight, bringing a sense of comfort to the blonde.

A young boy passed them and tilted his hat, greeting them politely. Everly noticed him as Jerry.

"Hello," Diana said not interested in the boy whatsoever.

A few seconds later, Diana was knocking on the Cuthberts front door. The door opened with a swift creak, revealing Marilla Cuthbert.

"Good afternoon, Miss Cuthbert." Marilla looked at Diana then towards Everly, "Good afternoon, Diana and Everly."

The blonde smiled at the familiar woman.

"This is Miss Ruby Gillis," Diana gestured to Ruby, "Hello." The girl said.

"Hello." There was moment of silence then Marilla spoke up again, "What brings you three by?" questioned Marilla, unaware of Anne's absence at school for more than several days.

"We thought Anne might like to have her books and everything." Diana told the Cuthbert as she gave the women Anne's books.

Everly opened her mouth speak, "We held on to them in hopes Anna would come back but-" She could barely finish because of eager Ruby.

"-Nice to meet you," Ruby nodded her head, rudely cutting off Everly, "Come on, Diana and Everly." The girl began to turn around and walked away but Diana was determined to speak and didn't move, "We've been worried about her..Isn't that right girls?"

Ruby and Everly looked at each other before they both said, "Diana especially."

"Although, I'm starting to miss her more and more." Everly added, "As the days go by, that is."

Marilla looked between the three girls confused, becoming concerned the more they talk of Anne, as if the red head is dead or messing. She knitted her brows, "Has something happened?"

"Anne's suffering, isn't she? I just know it. Anne is too sensitive for this world. That's what she told me once, anyway." Diana voice grew quieter as she whispered, "Is she truly never coming back to school?"

Ruby unaware of the wrong timing says, "If not, we can sit together, Diana-" Everly quickly nudged Ruby in the arm and the girl glared at Everly before rubbing the spot.

"When did you last see her?"

Diana looked up, "It's been days and days. I never imagined she wouldn't come back."

Maybe Diana was overreacting, maybe she wasn't, but this moment showed Everly the kind of friend Diana was. She's caring and thoughtful, truly a great person.

Everly placed her hand on Diana's arm, letting her know she was there for the girl.

"Neither did I."

"May we say hello to her?" Diana asked.

Everly dropped her hand, "It'll only be a couple minutes, Miss Cuthbert." She pleaded.

"Uh," Marilla glanced around, unsure of what do and quickly made up an excuse,"Anne is running an errand at present, but I'll sure to tell her you were here."

"Thank you," Everly said as Diana got carried away and talked over her friend, to express her gratitude in much more detailed way, "Please do, Miss Cuthbert. Please tell Anne we miss her very much. Thank you."

"You can count on it,"

Ruby and Diana walked ahead of Everly as they talked to each other. Going over a gift idea Diana was planning for Anne, but Ruby only sighed at the idea.

Everlys eyes caught Jerry's and she figured she'd say hi to the boy, or at least properly introduce herself.

"Where you going?" Diana asked, with a confused tone. Everly looked at her, "To properly introduce myself."

Ruby looked at Jerry then back at Everly, "To that boy? He scoops up hay for a living," Her voice was laced with disgust.

Everly rolled her eyes at the obnoxious girl and did not bother to respond.

"No, no." Ruby said as she tugged on Diana's arm. She saw Jerry curiously look at them and began to panic, "We'll wait for you near the path, isn't that right, Diana?"

"Um, I suppose so."
