"Don't let your emotions get the best of you, Dani. If you do, you die."

Father's words play through my head over and over again as we sit in the infirmary waiting for the healer to check him.
That was my signet.
I didn't know that signets could manifest themselves so suddenly. I thought you would know— or at least have a general idea. But perhaps that was the energy thrumming inside me. Who am I kidding? Of course, it was the energy thrumming inside me, I just didn't know it then. But what, exactly, my signet is I don't know.
Azare scoffs in my head, but it doesn't sound like a condescending one. It sounds like a proud one if that's even possible. "You can manipulate the vibrations of any object - the air, a building, even the ground. You can cause earthquakes, Fiery One. Bring down entire mountains."
"Manipulate vibrations of any object?" That sounds lethal.
"Everything in the world is vibrating, even the air in the sky. You can tap into those vibrations and control them like waves of power." Yeah, I think we learned something about that in physics. "You can produce blast waves like the one you did on the flight. It's a very rare and very powerful signet. Nothing less for my rider."
"You say I can tap into all sources of vibrations right?"
"Yes."
"And humans are included in those things, right?"
"Yes."
Oh gods. "What could potentially happen if I turned the power onto a person? Or even an animal?"
There was a pause before Azare answered, "Well, there's a possibility that you break every bone in their body and crush their organs. They'll bleed internally and externally. They may die if you exert enough of your signet on them."
My throat constricts. "So I could've done some damage to my father? Like injured him until no repair?" I don't know why I care. He's a horrible father and an even more horrible person. But I didn't want to be the one that hurt him - at least not yet.
"You didn't hit him," Azare says. "You hit Baelor, and his scales protected him from real damage. But he's still reeling from the blast wave. And pissed, by the way. But he won't do anything. Not on my watch."
I sigh a breath of relief, even though I'm confused as hell. Why was I so worried about him? He wouldn't worry about me. I run my sweaty palms on my thighs as I sit outside the room my father's in.
The door opens and Father and a healer step out of it. I straighten from the seat as I look over him. Father doesn't look any different aside from exchanging his flight leathers for his general coat.
"Danica," Father says in his usual monotone voice. "I thought you'd be in class by now." He checks his watch on his wrist. "It is past the time I allocated for our flight this morning. It is irresponsible to be tardy to class."
