My half-assed effort was close enough

Eddie

I have been working 24 hour and 36 hour shifts for the last two weeks and I am exhausted. I still have a kid to take care of and feed though. At least, I have the bills covered for this month. I haven't talked to Buck for more than a minute since the incident at the station with Amelia. My crush on him is getting stronger and I wish I could tell him but we are still in the friend zone.

It is so weird with him being at a different fire station. Tommy is a good work partner but we just don't think like two peas in a pod.

"Carla is picking you and Amelia up from school today. Make sure that she goes home with you and not someone else. I love you kiddo," I ruffle with my teenager's hair and let him walk away independently with his crutches to his middle school.

Chris doesn't have class with Amelia but he's sees her almost everyday after school. Buck and I came up with an agreement that Amelia would be coming to my house on days that his firefighter shifts were long and he nor Maddie could pick her up.

Every time, Buck picks Amelia up from my house instead of Maddie I have the urge to tell him how much I miss him at the 118 and our playdates with Amelia. I never have the courage to say anything though and he always comes tired from work then has to drive half an hour home since their old house is still not completely theirs yet. At least that's what I last heard from Buck.

I don't want to mess anything up this second time. I already messed up with Shannon.

I arrive at the fire station 5 minutes late since I was driving Chris to school, and oh boy drama has definitely occurred here and it's not even 8 am.

Everyone is silent and standing below the stairs to Cap's office as if they are eavesdropping on a conversation they shouldn't be hearing. It's weirdly um qu.... no silent in the station and the only person missing is Tommy.

"Hen, what is going on? Why is everyone looking up at Cap's office?" I tap her shoulder after I have changed in the locker rooms.

"Shhhhh..." Chim shushes me as he pulls my collar to duck down before we get caught by Cap.

"Umm.. okay?" I look over at the ceiling to see if a call has come in.

A minute later, Cap unlocks his door and walks down the stairs with Officer Athena Grant, his girlfriend.

"Morning Cap," Chimney says with a big grin on his face.

"Morning Chim, could you please restock the storage cabinet in the back of the truck with gauze and antiseptic wipes?" Cap says in a tone that ensues he has something to hide but isn't telling us.
