Hot shot was fast asleep when suddenly a sharp pain woke him up. Hot shot wasn't to happy about it. It was coming from the knee where his sarcoma was. It hurt a lot, he wanted the pain to stop. Quickshadow saw he was awake. "Hot shot is everything alright?" Quickshadow asked.

"My knee hurts," Hot shot answered.

"I'm going to get a nurse to help you feel better," Quickshadow said. She went to get a nurse and a nurse came into the room with her.

"Hot shot would you like some painkillers?" The nurse asked.

"Yes," Hot shot answered.

The nurse left the room and came back with medicine. Hot shot took the medicine she gave him. "It should start to work in 20 minutes so try to settle down and relax," the nurse said.

"Okay," Hot shot said.

Hot shot began to relax while waiting for the medicine to work. Quickshadow even read him a story to help him relax. Hot shot was feeling sleepy and soon fell asleep.

Hot shot was woken up sometimes during his time in the hospital. Hot shot wasn't too happy about that. Hot shot knew he was going to have to get used to it.

Hot shot woke up in the morning and had his breakfast. Hot shot was being checked over by the nurses to see how he was doing. They wanted to make sure he was doing alright. "Okay Hot shot you seem to be doing okay." A nurse named Betsy said. Then Betsy took some blood and took it to be tested. Now Hot shot was going to have to wait until the she came back so he could take the medicine to help with the chemotherapy side effects.

Hot shot saw someone come in. It was Heatwave his father. "Hello son I am here to have a shift with you here in the hospital," Heatwave said. Hot shot knew his parents were taking shifts with him while he was here in the hospital. Hot shot was happy when one of them came to be with him, but sad when the other had to leave. But the good thing was they always came back.

"Hi daddy," Hot shot said.

Heatwave had a few things in his hands. "I got some gifts from the family for you son," Heatwave said. "They want to cheer you up," he said. "They all know you have cancer and want to give you these things to help cheer you up," he said.

"But why am I getting all of these presents? It's not my birthday and it's not Christmas," Hot shot said.

"When a child is diagnosed with cancer the family and family friends want to send gifts to cheer the child up," Quickshadow said. "It is their way of wishing them strength and hope that they get well," she explained. "It is their way of showing they care," she said. "It got to go now Hot shot, I will be back as soon as I can," she said. Then she kissed Hot shot's head and left.

Hot shot was sad to see her leave, but he was glad his father was there. Hot shot looked at all the presents he got. There were a few stuffed animals, toys, books and things to color and draw with. Hot shot even saw there were a few cards. Heatwave read them to Hot shot. Hot liked the fact his family was thinking of him. It made him very happy to be thought of.

Hot shot was very busy in the hospital once hooked up to his chemotherapy. Hot shot was able to hang out in the playroom. Hot shot was able to play with his friends in the hospital and the other kids there too. Hot shot was glad he was able to have fun while in the hospital. Hot shot was hoping to be home soon. Mostly because he missed Fireplug his puppy. Hot shot was looking forward to seeing Fireplug again.

Hot shot was sad when he found out Fireplug wasn't allowed at the hospital. But he was hoping that he would be able to soon go home and see Fireplug.

Hot shot's chemotherapy took about five hours that day. Hot shot was able to rest and relax once it was over. Hot shot felt pretty tired and sick after chemotherapy.

"I hope to go home soon," Hot shot said.

"We are hoping for you to be home soon too son," Heatwave said. "It will be about three weeks before you can go home," he said. "So try to be patient." he told him.

"Okay daddy," Hot shot said.

Hot shot was spending time trying to entertain himself in the hospital. Hot shot did so because he found it could be boring in the hospital.

"Son is something on your mind?" Heatwave asked when he saw Hot shot being quiet.

"I'm feeling many feelings about what is happening," Hot shot said.

"That's okay son lots of feelings are normal about something like this," Heatwave said. "Cancer is hard on everyone and we are here for you," he said.

"Thanks daddy," Hot shot said.

Hot shot got chemotherapy for the next two days. Hot shot was feeling very tired and sick from it the chemotherapy.

Today his mother was with him. "Mummy what is it like when hair falls out does it hurt?" Hot shot asked.

"Some kids feel soreness, burning, tingling or itching or nothing at all when their hair falls out," Quickshadow said. "Everyone is different it depends on the person," she said.

"When will it start to fall out?" Hot shot asked.

"It could start to fall out 2-3 weeks after treatment starts," Quickshadow said. "It could start before then after that," she said. "When and how quickly it happens is different for everyone," she said. "You might only lose some of your hair, or it might thin out slowly, or you might lose all of it really fast. You might even lose your eyebrows and eyelashes." She explained.

"Oh," Hot shot said.

"Some kids like to wear pretend hair called wigs you can put it on and take it off whenever you want" Quickshadow said. "The wig could be a different color or texture than your hair if you want a different style or you can have a wig made to look like the way your hair was before," she said.

"Neat," Hot shot said.

"Some kids wear bandanas or scarves or some kind of hat to cover their heads," Quickshadow said. "They come in many styles and colors too," she said.

"Cool," Hot shot said.

"Some kids choose not to cover their heads and be bald and proud," Quickshadow said.

"Wow," Hot shot said. "Can I choose what I do?" he asked.

"Yes whatever you do is your choice," Quickshadow told him. "There is no right or wrong way to do it, so do whatever you like best," she said.

Hot shot felt better after talking to his mother. Hot shot still had a couple of more weeks in the hospital. He was going to be brave through it all.
