Alexine stood by the barred window, her gaze fixed on the courtyard below where prisoners labored under the watchful eyes of the guards. The sight was a bleak reminder of the world she was now trapped in. Her thoughts drifted to her father, her heart aching with worry and longing.

Dr. Vogelbaum entered the room quietly, observing her for a moment before speaking. "I see you haven't touched your food," he remarked, his voice calm but with an edge of concern.

Alexine didn't turn to look at him. Instead, she kept her eyes on the window, the lines of her face hardening with resolve. "I won't eat until I know my father is alright," she said firmly, the strength in her voice belying the turmoil within.

Dr. Vogelbaum approached her, a flicker of something like admiration crossing his features. "You have an indomitable spirit, Alexine," he said softly. "Driven by the uncontrollable force of the human spirit, even in the midst of such reviling circumstances."

You did this to me. She thought.

He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a carefully folded letter. "I've been keeping this," he admitted, his voice lowering. "I didn't want to give it to you at first, but I believe you deserve to see it."

Alexine's heart skipped a beat as she took the letter from his outstretched hand, her fingers trembling. She unfolded it hastily, recognizing her father's familiar handwriting. The words blurred as tears filled her eyes, but she forced herself to read.

"My dearest Alexine,

I am being well taken care of by the nurses here, and I have good food. Please do not worry about me. I beg you to write back to me and let me know how you are. I miss you terribly and love you more than words can express. Be strong, my brave girl.

With all my love,
Papa"

Alexine's resolve crumbled as she read her father's heartfelt words. She sank to the floor, clutching the letter to her chest, sobs wracking her body. The room seemed to close in around her, the weight of her emotions too much to bear.

Dr. Vogelbaum watched her with a mix of pity and admiration. He knelt beside her, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. "Your father loves you very much, Alexine," he said quietly. "And he is safe, just as he says. Now you must take care of yourself, for his sake as well as your own."

Through her tears, Alexine nodded, clutching the letter even tighter. The knowledge that her father was safe gave her a renewed sense of purpose. She did not know if she could endure but she would try.

Dr. Vogelbaum watched Alexine with a calm, measured gaze. "It's almost over, Alexine," he said softly. "The experimentation is nearly complete."

Alexine looked at him with weary eyes, filled with doubt. "I don't believe you," she whispered, clutching the letter from her father tightly.
