It was a rare, tranquil evening. Alexine sat by the small fireplace in their modest apartment, the flickering flames casting a warm glow on the walls. Her father, in his new wheelchair, was engrossed in a book, occasionally glancing up to smile at his daughter. Frederich had come over for dinner, an unusual but welcomed guest in their home. Her father wasn't very pleased but people visited him less and less these days. He'll take any company he could.
After the meal, Alexine cleared the table while Frederich and her father chatted about mundane things-books, the weather, memories of better times. The atmosphere was surprisingly light, almost as if they had managed to carve out a small bubble of normalcy in the chaos that surrounded them.
When the dishes were done, Frederich suggested playing a game of cards. Alexine eagerly agreed, and soon the three of them were seated around the table, shuffling the deck and dealing out hands.
Frederich watched Alexine as she played, her laughter bright and infectious, her eyes sparkling with a rare joy. He couldn't help but smile at her, feeling a warmth in his chest that he hadn't felt in a long time. Her father, too, seemed happier, his eyes twinkling as he watched his daughter enjoy herself.
As the evening wore on, Alexine's father began to nod off, the day's fatigue catching up with him. Frederich gently wheeled him to his room, tucking him in with a tenderness that surprised even him. When he returned to the living room, he found Alexine by the window, gazing out at the moonlit street.
"Thank you for tonight," she said softly, turning to face him. "It's been a long time since I've seen him so happy."
Frederich walked over to her, standing close but not too close. "It was my pleasure. I'm glad I could bring some joy to you both."
They stood in comfortable silence for a moment, the only sound the soft crackling of the dying fire. Then, Frederich reached out and gently took her hand, his thumb brushing over her knuckles. She looked up at him, her eyes searching his face.
"I wish things were different," he said quietly. "I wish I could take you away from all of this."
Alexine squeezed his hand. "I know. But for tonight, this was enough. More than enough."
He leaned down, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead. She closed her eyes, savoring the moment, the rare feeling of peace and safety. When he pulled back, he saw tears glistening in her eyes, but she was smiling.
"I should go," he said reluctantly, not wanting to break the spell of the evening.
She nodded, but didn't let go of his hand immediately. "Will you come back tomorrow?"
"If you want me to."
"I do."
Frederich smiled, his heart swelling with a feeling he didn't quite dare to name. "Then I'll be here."
