Today was the day I had been waiting for years; Mirabel's eighteenth birthday. This day had me looking forward but now that it had come, I knew better than attending it. I was driving to Dashiell's subterranean property in the mountains. The historical roman cave that was passed down to the strongest alpha bloodlines from generation to generation and currently it was under our family's name. Whenever the full moon came, I always resorted to that place. This time necessity knocked my door with full force. The mating season was over the head along with a mighty full moon. Two worse would only multiply the probability of ruining the night. Considering the night affecting an alpha the most, my wolf would be on unbearable heat. To stay around her in such a state would be like waiting for a volcano that would erupt any time. If she turned out to be my mate, I was sure as daylight Gunnolf wouldn't be able to hold back his suppressed desire even if he put every drop of his control and that might scare her off. It was best if I skipped the event.
To keep him under control I had to distance and tie myself with chains. Mating season wouldn't do any better to ease my struggle and I wasn't taking any chances.
My eyes flicked to the LED screen when it displayed a name. I pressed the button on the wheel to take the call.
"Morning, Felix," I greeted, keeping my eyes on the road.
"Morning, Alpha. You must be driving," He said. Callum must have told him.
"I am. How's the preparation going?" I enquired, taking a sharp turn.
"All the arrangements are getting done as per your command. I am personally supervising," He told me and I inwardly made a mental note.
"And is she up yet?" I hesitated. I was prepared to have any kind of response.
"That is why I called you," He uttered. "She is not having breakfast and wants me to cancel the party," I exhaled heavily. This was expected.
"Did you tell her I had to leave for urgent work and want the party to continue without me?"
"She still isn't willing to have it without you," My little butterfly. It was evident how close we had gotten over the years. It was no lie that she wouldn't have said this. I had become her best friend and to have the party without me was equal to having it with Dracula in caskets.
"Hand her the phone," I commanded. He complied.
Only a little drag of breath conveyed me that she was listening. "Princess? Are you here?" I murmured softly and caught up on another sigh.
"If you didn't make it tonight, I won't speak to you ever again," She tried to threaten me but it came out as a harmless warning. I smiled softly, so wanting to pull her cheeks.
"This day means the world to me and if the emergency haven't involved little children dying, I wouldn't have skipped the event." I paused to collect her reaction that was a little hitch.
"Children?"
"Yes. I am on my way to rescue children stuck in a torched school building," I smoothly lied even though Gunnolf was snarling, ready to rip me to pieces.
"I wasn't informed about that," She muttered in realisation. "We can still postpone the party," It could be difficult to convince her indirectly sometimes.
"Many packs are coming from different countries and states, it would not be kind to waste their time in travelling," I said and hoped I made enough sense. She didn't reply for long and that told me it worked.
"Um...but under one condition, I will celebrate," May the universe have mercy on me. "You have to be here at my cake cutting ceremony at 12, otherwise I will do what you won't like, I will go out past curfew time." Now this time her threat did hit home. My back steeled of its own over the thought of her being out with a male again.
