Mirabel

My eyes opened to a beige ceiling with an excruciating pain in my head. Tiredness was dawning upon me as I struggled to look around and register that I was admitted to a hospital with a bandage on my head and wrist. I pushed myself in a sitting position despite feeling pulled back by lack of energy. I was staring at the needle in my vein when the door opened and a nurse came in with a slight shocking expression morphing to a small, genial smile.

"I see you are awake," She came closer to me as I responded to her with a smile. "How are you feeling?" She asked, picking up a clipboard beside me and reading the content on some paper on it. I looked out of the opened door in hope to spot any familiar face but the bench was empty.

"I guess better than before," I replied while trying to remember the remnants of the incident. I hit my head on the rack and passed out. The rest was a mystery. "Who brought me here?" I asked all of a sudden, dismissing whatever she was saying in response to my earlier reply.

She pondered over it for a second. "I believe the name was Alisa Benson, um...let me check...yeah, it was her with her boyfriend," The nurse said and returned back to write something on the paper.

"Has anyone else come with them?" I asked, already knowing the answer very well. But still, this naivety in me never let me breathe. The nurse shook her head and looked up.

"No, honey. Were you expecting someone?" She stepped ahead, flashing light in my eyes to check my pupil dilation. I shook my head after the check up. She glanced at the side of my neck and I read the question that was coming next.

"How did you get that mark on your neck?" She enquired, eying the purple blotch with interest. It usually looked like a nasty shape of a hickey but in all honesty it was not a hickey. Hickey never stayed permanently, this was permanent and I, even after all my efforts, couldn't recall where I got this from. I even went for laser therapy but that couldn't even dime down the mark. So now I throw a typical lie to everyone.

"I burnt my neck when I was a kid, it's pretty staying with me throughout my life," I touched the mark as I said it. Now I never told anyone how this mark was lucky for me. Whenever I caressed it, weird, calming sensations would start to mount in me. If I would ever get stressed over something, all I had to do was play with it and it would magically calm me down. This mark was a lucky button for my mood swings.

"It's a hell of a spot to get burnt," She winked at me with a teasing glint. I smiled and somehow agreed with her. That's why I would usually keep it covered with makeup.

After she thoroughly checked me up, she let Alisa and my family into the room.

My eyes glowed over watching my kids running to me for a hug. I collected both of them in my arms and let out a sigh. These two babies tightly hugged my waist with their tiny, mighty arms. My children were the source of my motivation. I dare not to think about the life I would have had without them. These two munchkins gave me purpose to live my life. I wouldn't have thrived this harder if not for them and their future.

"Mama, are you okay now?" Sevyn asked me in her cute, worried voice. I caressed my daughter's cheek and smiled warmly.

"I am far better now, my love. How have you both been?" I asked them.

"We are okay, we missed you," Sevyn replied, her light brown pigtails bouncing with her head movements. My heart was flowing with love for them. I leaned down to kiss their cheeks.

"We missed you so much, remember you...you promised us you would take us to the amusement park this morning but now you have hurt yourself," Rowan babbled innocently, his voice reducing to mild displeasure. I ruffled his hair and promised to take him next week. Excited, they both shared a content look and then rushed to show me drawings they made with their grandparents. I smiled wider glancing at both my foster parents who were looking at me with sorrowful eyes and small smiles. Albert and Eleanor stepped ahead. Albert pinched Rowan's cheek and took him from my embrace to his and Eleanor came to hug me. I watched the duo playing with each other over Eleanor's shoulder. Rowan's giggled every time Albert tickled him and Seyvn joined them. The sight brought warmth to my heart. Even though they weren't my blood family but I was lucky to have them. I was blessed with a loving family.
