penelope was back at work the day after tim went home. luckily, sargent grey gave her a few days away from the station after seeing tim get shot, as per the rules for rookies. though after the small break, she felt the same nervousness she did her first day, not sure who her temporary T.O would be.

"hey, boot!" she heard from behind her, instinctively turning a round to see officer lopez walking up to her. when the older woman caught up, she looked slightly down towards her with a smile "how's bradford?" she asked the rookie, knowing that she'd dropped him home the day before.

"uh... good, i think?" she frowned, walking alongside angela, though she had to walk a bit faster than normal to keep up with her pace. "he told me to 'leave him the hell alone' and to 'stop feeling guilty and treating him like a child' so... yeah he seems normal" she shrugged.

"you're a good person, penelope" angela smiled once they reached the doors to the room for roll call.

"thank you, officer" she thanked just as the two women entered and went their separate. penelope sat down at the table alongside jackson and lucy while olan walked into the room. he made his way to the front and pulled out his chair to find a bouquet on the seat.

penelope, unaware of his whole bride fiasco, looked at the bunch of flowers with confusion. "oh, very funny you guys!" john laughed "of course! you know, this means now i have to throw them" he tossed the bouquet over his shoulder, making lucy and penny duck to avoid it as it flew through the air and landed in front of sergeant as he entered the room.

"all right, the honeymoon's over" he grumbled, strolling up to the board in front of everyone "3, 5, 21" he said as he wrote the numbers "officer nolan, you care to guess what these numbers represent?" he spun around.

"combination to your heart, sir?" he joked, making penny roll her eyes. she wasn't the biggest fan of nolan after he (and the other rookies) had basically ignored her throughout their time at the academy, but his attitude towards roll called annoyed her.

she felt he didn't take the job very seriously and it annoyed her that he (as a white man) could be as funny as he wanted during work hours and still climb up the ladder with limited difficulty. no matter how many jokes penny made in the safety of tim's shop or when she was at home, it didn't change the fact they she wouldn't make jokes in front of sergeant grey or anyone that had authority over her (bar tim).

"three is the number of opportunities you had to disable runaway bride's car yesterday. five vehicles were damaged because you failed to do so. and the last number..." he trailed off, pointing at talia for the other answer "officer bishop"

"$21,000 in property damage the city has to pay"

"correct" grey feigned delight at the answer "all in all, officer nolan's first pursuit reveals room for improvement. onward, officer valentine is in need of a training officer until tim bradford is cleared for duty" he announced, making lucy and jackson look at penelope with interest "officer scott wrigley, you get the nod" he finished "that's it, stay safe out there"

penelope was walking down the hall with her temporary T.O. her hands feeling strangely empty. officer wrigley had decided who would be carrying all their gear and it was for some reason him. at first, the woman insisted that she could handle it and was certain it was some sort of knock off tim test. maybe a 'scott screening'?

nevertheless, the man refused to hand it over and began walking down the hall towards the shop. "are you sure i can't carry that?" she checked, partially feeling guilty.

"absolutely! listen, i've been on the job 12 years, never fired my weapon. you took on a couple high-powered jokers and saved your T.O. on day two. so that makes you a rock star in my book" he told her as they reached the car and he started to pack the items away in the boot "and rock stars don't pack-mule the gear"

"i didn't really do anything" she denied, walking a round to the passenger side and getting in the car, following wrigley's actions.

"awwe" he cooed, making penny want to cringe "modest, too. i can see why tim's been boasting about you"

"ha!" she laughed sarcastically at the thought. "sure"

"okay, fine. he didn't. but i'm not like that. i give credit where it's due and you have earned a free pass today. so anything you need, just ask" he offered her, driving out of the station without asking her any questions at all. penny sat in silence (as much as it pained her to do so) considering she wasn't 100% certain that the whole thing wasn't a cruel test.

"so... i hear you're a genius"

"i guess"

"what's uh- 8324 divided by 6.24?"

"1333.97436" penny sighed, sensing that that wouldn't be the last question of the same sort "i'll make this slightly easier for you, sir. i know the answers to all of those questions"

"hmm" he hummed, pulling up next to a sidewalk where they could just see a stop sign from around the corner. "quick! 9 x 3 x 75!"

"2025"

"okay, what about-"

"morning of rolling-stop citations should take us nicely into lunch" wrigley noted, shocking penny completely. she was sure almost every cop she'd come across had wanted to get higher. weather they were a traffic cop or in swat, there was always a bigger goal in sight. apparently that wasn't true when it came to officer wrigley.

"we're gonna sit here all morning?" she confirmed.

"hey" he looked over at her with a smile "writing tickets is the heart of the job"

"do you want to maybe quiz me or something?"

"nope"

"right" penelope complained silently, sitting back in her seat.

after a while more of driving around doing absolutely nothing substantial, officer wrigley pulled into a diners parking lot. silently, he got out of the car, signalling for penelope to do the same. she did just that, coming around the front of the car and facing the diner in front of them.

"great morning, officer valentine" he congratulated, nodding towards the building "i'm gonna drop you here for lunch"

"you're what?"

"well uh, i like to go home to eat, you know, get these wool pants off, air things out" he reasoned, making penny grimace at the thought "be back in 40"
