Destiny woke up with a pounding headache and the remnants of last night's chaos playing on repeat in her mind. She needed a distraction, something to take her mind off the embarrassing episode.
Deciding that a walk and some fresh air would do her good, she grabbed her purse and headed out to the corner store to buy some food.
As she turned the corner, the small store came into view. It was a small place, tucked between a barbershop and a laundromat, but it had a charm that always made her feel at home. She walked inside, the bell above the door jingling to announce her arrival.
Destiny made her way to the snacks aisle, scanning the shelves for something to soothe her hangover. Just as she reached for a bag of chips, she heard a familiar voice.
"Aye, we keep meeting like this," Durk said, standing at the end of the aisle with a Big Shot soda.
Destiny's heart skipped a beat. She hadn't expected to see him so soon after their awkward morning together.
"Oh, it's you," she replied, trying to sound nonchalant.
Durk chuckled, his eyes twinkling with amusement. "What, you ain't happy to see me?"
Destiny rolled her eyes, though she couldn't suppress the smile tugging at her lips. "I didn't say that. Just... surprised."
"Well, since we keep running into each other, how about I buy you those snacks?" Durk offered, holding up his Big Shot.
Destiny raised an eyebrow. "You think you can buy me off with some chips?"
Durk shrugged, a playful grin on his face. "Nah, just trying to be nice. But if you don't want free snacks, that's cool too."
She hesitated for a moment, then sighed. "Alright, fine. But only because I'm starving."
They walked to the counter together, the banter continuing. As the cashier rang up their items, Destiny found herself enjoying the easy conversation. Despite the initial tension, there was something about Durk that intrigued her.
"So, what's got you out and about this early?" Durk asked, glancing at her as he paid for the snacks.
"Just needed some fresh air," Destiny replied, trying to keep it casual. "And food, obviously."
"Rough night?" Durk's tone was light, but there was a hint of genuine curiosity.
"Something like that," she said, not wanting to dive into the details of her family drama.
As they stepped outside, the sun was bright, and the city was beginning to wake up. Destiny turned to Durk, holding her bag of snacks. "Thanks for this. You didn't have to."
"Anytime," Durk replied, leaning casually against the wall. "So, you gonna give me your number or what? Seems like fate keeps throwing us together."
Destiny hesitated, but there was a spark of curiosity in her that she couldn't ignore. "Alright, but don't get any ideas," she said, pulling out her phone.
