Monday rolled around, and Destiny woke up to a cracked phone screen and an empty wallet. It was just one of those mornings where everything felt like it was falling apart.
She had to get to work, but her car had broken down last week, and she hadn't been able to fix it yet. Von, always looking out, had hit her with a simple text.
"Need a ride? I got you."
Destiny wasn't one to rely on people, but with how her life was going lately, she didn't have much choice.
"Yeah, you can take me. Just drop me off and I'll figure it out later,"
she texted back, trying to keep it casual, even though Von was always going out of his way for her. He pulled up to her place about 20 minutes later, his car rumbling as the bass hit, and Destiny grabbed her bag, sliding into the passenger seat.
"Don't even worry about it. I'll pick you up later too," Von said, glancing over at her with a grin as they drove.
"You ain't gotta do all that, but thanks," she replied, a small smile creeping onto her lips as she leaned back into the seat. Von always had this way of making things feel lighter and easier.
When they pulled up to the school, Destiny got out, flashing him a quick look before heading inside .Another Monday. The day started like any other greeting the kids, and organizing activities but things took a turn when a new student was introduced to the class.
This is Gabrielle," her colleague had said, ushering in a little girl with a bright smile. Destiny's eyes widened slightly. Gabrielle looked... just like Durk
The resemblance was uncanny same eyes, same little dimple when she smiled. It threw Destiny for a loop, and she had to shake herself back into focus.
As the day went on, Destiny couldn't help but be drawn to Gabrielle. The little girl was sweet, polite, and everything that made Destiny's job worth it.
But every time she looked at Gabrielle, her mind flashed back to Durk. Could it be? Nah, she was tripping. There was no way. But the thought lingered, messing with her brain at her all day.
When the final bell rang, Destiny packed up her things, and true to his word, Von was there waiting for her in the parking lot.
"How was your day?" Von asked, glancing at her as they pulled off.
Destiny shrugged. "It was alright. Met this new student today... The crazy thing is, she looks just like Durk. Got me all kinds of messed up."
Von let out a low chuckle. "Durk got kids all over, huh? Ain't surprised."
Destiny smirked, but deep down, the thought still made her uneasy. They pulled into the McDonald's drive thru, and Von ordered them both some food before they headed back to his place. The minute they walked in, Von tossed her one of his hoodies. It was something he always did like a silent promise that she could make herself at home whenever.
