The taxi ride was much faster then I wanted, we was arriving at a destination we hoped we'd never arrive at. Robby sat with his legs on my lap the entire ride, it wasn't comfy for either of us but Robby spotted the perverted gaze of the taxi driver as he lowered his rearview mirror, down to where my thighs were barely covered by my shorts. I had obviously noticed way before Robby did but I was thankful anyway. The scenery was bright outside the window, how ironic that it was bringing a cloud of misery in its wake. Me and my brother would cast shadows on this valley and be tormented by the pity of onlookers.Me and Robby practically raised each other, while mum was out with any man that would give her attention or was rich enough to buy her the latest handbag, we were stealing from the local corner shop so we had enough food to survive. When mum died it didn't feel much differnet than when she was alive, it was so common that I expected her to walk into the house at 4 in the morning with a random man she met in the local bar. But she never came. The courts then decided we had to live with our biological dad, ignoring our pleads about how we raised ourselves anyway.
We passed billboard after billboard of 'LaRusso auto motors' which I learnt to be my dad's biggest rival. Of course he was more successful than Johnny, he's more obssessed with his vandetta with LaRusso then to do anything with his life. We pulled onto Burbank and saw the apartments that I knew one belonged to our dad. Me and Robby both looked at each, guessing we had the same realisation. The walls were falling apart, the paint slowly chipping away after years. The plants around were swallowed by weeds, killing any trace of beauty.
Robby's muscles were tense and awkward, I knew he didn't wanna see our dad. I however, had a glimmer of hope for Johnny. We met him once throughout our lives when he came to say 'hi' on our 8th birthday. What a great introduction to your kids, I thought bitterly. Robby had always had mum, sure she loved us both but he was obviouly her favourite, I just wished it would be that way for me with Johnny, so that I finally have someone.
He struggled silently with his hoodie as the car pulled into a parking spot, he then dumped it on my lap and unbuckled his seatbelt. I instantly tie his hoddie around my waist and climb out after Robby, not wanting to be alone with the man. I open the trunk and begin pulling out all our belongings while Robby pays the driver. Most of me and Robby's stuff has been dumped in black bags because it's not like we had to buy suitcases to use for holidays.
All our bags were out by the time Robby had got to the back of the car. He grabbed the trunk and slammed it shut, shortly after the taxi driver sped of. As we stand surrounded by our baggage, I start to feel uneasy. We know nothing about this man even if he is our biological dad, we are essentially walking into the arms of a stranger.
A door nearby swung open and who stepped out of the threshold is a man early 30's at most, he had short blonde hair supported with a freshly shaved face, his eyes were a bright piercing blue. The blonde man had his arm around a young boy around our age, he had tanned skin and dark hair. The door slammed behind them and dust erupted from the force and the door shook on its hinges. A smile covered both their faces until the man saw me and Robby.
"Hey... dad." I smile awkwardly. Johnny quickly took his arm from around the young boy who now had a very confused face.
"Sensei, you never mentioned you have kids." The boy included. His words hit me like a punch to the stomach. Of course he didn't mention our exixtence to anyone. He probaly forgot we exist on a whole. I could feel Robby stiffen behind me.
"Yeah well he's not one to brag." I look at my dad. "I don't know if you remeber or not but we're moving in with you, you wouldn't mind taking our stuff in would you? We're going to look around." I hastily grab Robby's skateboard and turn him by the arm so he follows me. Johnny and the boy stand there as we walk away not saying anything, surrounded by me and Robby's belongings, but I imagine we'll be the topic of conversation as soon as we're out of earshot.
"What an asshole." Robby says kicking a bin over. We have no idea where we are or where we're going but we just keep walking anyway. "He can be a dad to that little prick but not to us? What the fuck!" I can feel the anger radiating of off him.
"I know its really fucking unfair." I say kicking the same bin Robby just kicked over.
"HEY YOU LITTLE SHITS DON'T TOUCH MY BIN." Me and Robby both look at each other and bolt, we both run until our legs are burning and were drenched in sweat. Our lungs were on fire and gasping for air. In our haste we somehow ended up at a skatepark so I sit down while Robby practice on his skateboard.
"Did you hear what that boy said y/n?" Robby questions. I shake my head silently. "He called Johnny Sensei, which means hes teaching karate again. You know what mum said about all that."
"That its what got he arrested all the time. I know Robby. But what can we do the man clearly doesn't care about us, he turned up to our 8th birthday party drunk out of his mind and it was the first time meeting us. I mean are we really surprised he's got a new family and is of ruining someone else's life?" I say bitterly.
Robby blinks at me and sighs loudly. "Low expectations, I know. We should probaly get back before it starts getting dark. It's almost nine."
