Everyone crowded around the maze doors, waiting anxiously, hoping that they would close.

Finally, the anticipated grumble of the doors came, but it was the walls behind them, at the other end of the glade. And they were opening not closing. Then the ones to their left opened and then to their right.

Instinctively, Thomas stepped towards Elizabeth and made a mental note to himself to not let her out of his sight. Jumping straight into action, Thomas turned to Chuck and Teresa, "Okay guys, I want you two to go straight to the council hall, start barricading the doors."

"Winston, you go with them." Newt added.

Winston, Chuck and Teresa left in direction of the council hall, all jogging. Thomas was overly aware of the fact that Elizabeth was paying little to no attention to the orders that were being given and instead she was staring out, down the opening into the maze. He couldn't tell whether the expression on her face was anger, confusion or fear.

"Get the others," Gally said to the builders, "Tell them to get to the forest, go hide! Now!"

Thomas turned to Minho next, "Minho I want you to grab every weapon you can find, I'll meet you at council hall."

They left and Thomas stepped towards Elizabeth, touching her forearm lightly, "El, you and I are gonna go get Alby."

Elizabeth nodded absentmindedly and Thomas began to pull on her arm to lead her towards the med hut, until a group of boys to their left began screaming with terror. Elizabeth looked towards the sound, then back down into the maze.

"Tom..." She uttered, as a griever began to prowl towards the glade threateningly.

"Alright everybody hide!" Thomas yelled

Elizabeth stayed put whilst everybody scattered, staring at the griever with that same confusing facial expression and her breath quickening.

"El!" Thomas exclaimed, grabbing her arm and dragging her with him, away from the griever.

Thomas didn't let go of her all the way until they reached the corn fields, as if he was scared that if he did he'd lose her again. They sat crouched down in silence with three other boys.

A snarling noise came from behind, telling them the grievers were getting closer. Then, a mechanical tail rose above their heads and slammed down on top of one of the boys; Zart. The tail grabbed him by the waist and lifted him up into the sky. Elizabeth stood, attempting to grab his hands as he flew off, but failed.

"El, come on. We have to run." Thomas slipped his hand into hers and they ran in the opposite direction to where Zart had gone.

"Go, go! Get to the village." Thomas called out to the boys infront of them.

Whilst running, the pair spotted Alby, being carried along by Clint and Jeff and ran over.

"Alby!" Thomas called.

"Are you okay?" Elizabeth asked.

Alby nodded, "What's going on?"

"They're here." Thomas told him.

"The grievers?" Jeff asked, his voice shaking with worry.

Before anyone could reply, a griever appeared right behind them, impaling another glader with its tail. Thomas grabbed a machete off the wall, ready to defend until he realised that grievers were surrounding them on all sides, grabbing boys with ease. Infront of them, a griever began to get closer, screeching as it did. Thinking fast, Elizabeth grabbed one of the lit jars infront of her and launched at the grievers face, setting it alight.
