Elizabeth was in a room, she was very young. It was white, completely white. She was all alone. But she was waiting. Waiting for someone.
The door clicked open and a brown haired woman appeared. She was moving quickly, rushing."April, Mommy has to go away for a while. I have to leave. I'm gonna go find us a new home."
Who was April? Why was this woman calling her April? Is this her mother?
"I thought April wasn't my name anymore, Mommy. What do you mean a new home? This is our home."
"I know sweetie, I'm sorry. But I have to go. You can't tell anyone, okay? If anyone asks, you just have to say I disappeared. Do you understand? Mommy has to disappear. But I will find you again, one day. I will."
"How long will you be gone for?"
"I'm not sure, sweetheart," The woman looked at her, recognising Elizabeth's - or April's - sadness, "Here, take this," The Woman unclasped a necklace from around her neck. It was a locket. She attached it to Elizabeth, "You can have it and then whenever you miss me, you can look inside and I'll be there."
Inside the locket was a photo of the woman, her mother, holding a baby.
The scene changed, she was sat infront of a screen, much older now. They were doing some sort of test. Teresa was next to her. Thomas was opposite.
She looked up and her's and Thomas' eyes met. His voice rung out in her head, "I'll beat you this time, El. I swear. Just you wait."
As she pressed the last button, there was a woman beside her, "Well done, Elizabeth. First again and much quicker than last time."
Elizabeth smiled at the woman, then looked across to Thomas smugly. He wasn't looking at her, still concentrated on his own screen but he smiled and shook his head.
She saw a snippet of herself, pushing a ceiling tile in her room to the side, reaching into the ceiling and getting a box. Then she watched as she opened the box and put some pieces of paper inside. They looked like letters. Letters from her mother.
Then it changed again. They were sat in some sort of conference room, filled with people wearing white; doctors, scientists, researchers. The woman stood infront of them all.
"I am very proud to announce that we have finally figured out the codes that will help us create the layout and functioning of the mazes in the upcoming maze trials. One of our very own, whom you may all know as Elizabeth, came up with the idea for this trial. Elizabeth, would you care to explain?"
Younger Elizabeth was smiling widely. She couldn't believe she was so happy. Why was she happy about this? She took The Woman's spot infront of the group.
"So, I've been able to engineer the mechanics within the walls of the maze to allow the maze to open on a day and close on a night. Every night the maze will change, opening up a new section that will eventually give them the code to leave. This means that the subjects within the maze will have to harness their critical thinking skills, which as we know helps to release the enzyme from the brains of the immune that can fight the flare. Within each section, their will be an area in which the pre-designed mechanical monsters for the maze will go in and out of. These monsters will force the subjects who enter the maze to act on their survival instincts which will also cause the release of the flare-attacking enzyme."
She couldn't believe that these words were coming out of her mouth. It was her idea. It was all her.
The scene changed again, but that word echoed over and over in her head. Subjects.
Her and Thomas were on a rooftop of a white building. They couldn't see over the ledge, but this was the closest they could get to being outside.
"Here, look what I made us."
She pulled out two leather bracelets, with magnets. Holding them together, she showed Thomas how they clicked together.
"You don't have to wear it if you do want." She told him. She was worried he wouldn't like it.
He smiled and pulled her in, kissing her tenderly. She swung her arms around this shoulders and smiled into the kiss.
"Of course I'll wear it. I love you, El." He said into the kiss.
"I love you infinitely more, Tom."
He pulled away, taking one of the bracelets out of her hand. He found a sharp rock and began carving something onto the back of the magnets. Elizabeth saw what he was doing and copied him, carving an 'E' onto the back of the magnet. Then they switched bracelets.
"This way, even when the magnets aren't connected, we still are."
His eyes sparkled with joy as he said this, brushing the hair out of her face and leaning in and...
Her thoughts were racing. Images flashed before her, too quickly for her to see them in detail. She saw Thomas and Teresa, The Woman, speaking to her. Then the man was stood infront of her. He was speaking to her angrily.
"What is that?" He asked her.
Elizabeth's hands flew to the chain that hung around her neck, not hidden under the safety of her shirt. The Man stepped forward, grabbing her hands and then grasping her locket chain. He yanked the chain from around her neck, snapping it.
"No! Give that back! Get off!" Elizabeth yelled, lunging forward but being held back by a guard.
It changed again. She was in some sort of hospital bed. She could hear people speaking. It was the man and the woman.
"She's too valuable to send in. Too clever. Maybe if we just remove her from the others." The woman was saying.
"No, she's dangerous. She will corrupt them." The man replied.
"Do you really believe this is the only way?" The woman asked.
No. No. No. No. No. Elizabeth was chanting in her head.
"We have to. We have to send her in. She won't stop communicating with them and she won't be compliant now she knows they're out there. There is no other option." The man said.
"Very well then. We'll send her in instead of this months arrival. Just let her have one more day with the others."
"Fine. Consider it done."
