Thomas led them to section 7, where the griever he had killed had been from. Before going down the long corridor where Thomas believed the exit was, they hid round a corner and Thomas leaned around to check what was there.
"Is it a griever?" Chuck asked as Thomas leaned his head back.
The young boy was petrified of facing the grievers, yet still tried to keep a brave face on. Elizabeth had noticed how much Chuck admired Thomas and mimicked his behaviourisms as the young boy nodded and mirrored Thomas' body language.
"Yeah." Thomas nodded.
"You take this Chuck," Minho handed him the beeping device they had found inside the griever, "Stay behind us."
"It's okay," Teresa reassured him, "Stick with me."
Elizabeth felt relief at the idea that Teresa would be with Chuck, to protect him. If all they got out of this was Chuck being safe, Elizabeth could die happy.
She ruffled the young boy's hair and smiled at him reassuringly, despite her own nervousness, "You'll be okay."
"Once we're through it'll activate and the door will open. Alright, we stay close, we stick together, we get through this. We get out now, or we die trying. Ready?" Everyone prepared themselves, feeling a sudden boost of moral after hearing Thomas' speech, "Let's go!"
Everyone ran out, shouting as they charged at the griever, weapons raised. They dug their spears at it, attempting to push it down the side. The creature spun around, using its tail to grab one of the boys, launching him down the side. It slammed it's legs down, knocking Teresa and Elizabeth over. Teresa swung her machete at its leg, slicing it clean in half but knocking the key out of Chuck's hands at the same time. He ran after it quickly and April turned back to the griever as Teresa went to help Chuck.
They managed to successfully push the griever down, feeling relieved as they thought the fighting bit was done. Until, they heard Chuck's screams for help as him and Teresa ran towards them, two grievers following behind and more coming up from the sides. Teresa and Chuck ran forward and behind the group with the key and the doors began to slide open.
"El," Thomas called, "Go with them in case anything happens, they have no weapons!"
Elizabeth nodded and ran after them, stepping into the circular corridor in the wall, where they were met with a closed door. They pounded on the door, attempted to pry it open until suddenly a red screen appeared, with numbers 1 through 8 on it.
"Eight numbers. There's a code." Teresa thought a-loud.
Elizabeth had created the maze. She had created the escape route. She searched her brain and any memory she had and then she remembered the eight letter code that had been on her original drawing of the maze that she had given to The Woman.
"The 8 sections of the maze." Elizabeth gasped, running closer so the boys could hear her.
"There's a code. Eight numbers, like the sections of the maze," She called out, "What's the sequence?"
"What?" Minho shouted back.
"The sections of the maze, what's the sequence?" Thomas asked, immediately understanding Elizabeth's thinking.
"7, 1, 5, 2, 6, 4," Minho began, whilst he battled with the grievers.
Teresa entered the first four numbers before Minho suddenly stopped shouting them. Elizabeth turned, to see a griever had landed directly on top of him. Jeff ran forward and stuck his spear right through the grievers body, allowing Minho to wriggle free. However, just as Minho escaped, the creature bit Jeff right in the waist, eating him whole.
