Morning light filtered through the shoji screens as Sanemi woke up, finding himself slumped on the floor beside Giyuu's bed. Ren was still nestled beside his mother, his small body rising and falling with each breath, his face peaceful in sleep.
The sight filled him with a bittersweet mixture of love and sorrow. He carefully got up, making sure not to disturb them, and quietly left the room, the weight of the unknown was gnawing at him.
Quietly, he stood up and walked out of the room, his mind heavy with concern. As he wandered the hallways, he soon encountered Shinobu. Her expression was grave, and she gestured for him to follow her to her office.
Once inside, Shinobu motioned for him to sit down. Sanemi did so, his eyes fixed on her, sensing the gravity of the moment. Sanemi's heart sank; he knew this couldn't be good news.
"What's wrong?" Sanemi asked, unable to hide the edge in his voice.
Shinobu hesitated, her fingers tracing the edge of her desk. "Shinazugawa, there's something you need to know about Giyuu's condition."
Sanemi's heart pounded. "Just tell me, Kocho."
Shinobu took a deep breath as she said her voice low. "Giyuu was pregnant."
Sanemi's eyes widened in shock. "Pregnant? But... he didn't say anything. Is it... is it okay for him? Is the baby going to be alright, even with him unconscious??"
Shinobu's stomach churned as she steeled herself for the next part. She shook her head slowly, her eyes filled with sorrow. "No, Shinazugawa... The baby..baby's gone. Giyuu lost the baby."
Sanemi's world seemed to crumble around him. "G..g-gone?" he whispered, barely able to form the word.
"Yes, Shinazugawa" Shinobu replied softly, her voice filled with compassion. "I'm so sorry."
Sanemi slumped back in his chair, the reality hitting him like a physical blow. He felt a crushing sense of loss, not just for the child they would never know, but for Giyuu, who would wake up to this heart-wrenching news.
"How... how do I tell him?" Sanemi's voice broke, his hands trembling.
Shinobu placed a gentle hand on his arm. "We'll do it together, when the time is right. But for now.. Giyuu needs to recover his strength. And Ren... Ren needs you to be strong for him."
Sanemi nodded numbly, the weight of the moment pressing down on him. "I'll be there for them," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "I have to be."
Shinobu gave him a reassuring squeeze. "We'll get through this, Shinazugawa.., I know it may be hard but.. we'll get through this" Sanemi nodded and stood up
Sanemi left Shinobu's office, his mind was a whirlwind of emotions. Sanemi returned to Giyuu's room, his heart heavy with the news he had just learned.
He approached slowly, his knees giving way as he reached Giyuu's side. He clutched Giyuu's hand, feeling the coolness of his skin, and tears threatened to fall.
"I'm so sorry, Giyuu.." he whispered, his voice breaking. "I'm so sorry I-i couldn't protect you...or our baby."
The weight of his emotions was almost too much to bear. Sanemi felt overwhelmed, devastated by the sight of his unconscious partner, by the loss of their unborn child, by the worry and fear gnawing at him. He felt his anger rise, a burning fury against the demon that had caused this pain. He took a deep breath, trying to steady himself.
