Thornclaw followed the clan back to camp, catching up to Thrushwing. "Thrushwing, do- do you like me?" Thornclaw asked uncertainly.
Thrushwing sighed and nodded slightly. "It's pathetic, but actually I liked you since we were kits. But... when I was 4 moons old, I felt bad, you always trying to impress me and Oakpelt, so I went easy one you. You changed after that. You went from a fun, playful denmate to an annoying little pest. I told myself I didn't like you after that, but part of me remembered the old you, and I still liked you. I remembered you weren't always arrogant..." Thrushwing admitted.
"I don't think I'm the best anymore. D-do you believe me?" Thornclaw asked. Thrushwing nodded. "D-do you think we could be mates?"
"Yes. I-if you want to that is..." Thrushwing blushed lightly.
"Of course I do! I want to yowl it to all the clans from atop of the gathering hill! Thrushwing is my mate!" Thornclaw exclaimed.
Thrushwing chuckled. "You don't need to be so loud," she joked, shouldering him gently.
Thornclaw stopped, his gaze growing serious. "I just want to know... what was going on between you and Oakpelt?"
Thrushwing smiled. "Your right, we ought to thank him, he kept reminding me of times when you weren't an annoying furball. He got me to keep liking you."
Thornclaw stopped. "Really? I thought Oakpelt was on the verge of becoming mates!" Thrushwing shook her head playfully.
"Come on, let's get back to camp." Thrushwing smiled. The two mates twined their tails together, purrs rumbling from them. When they arrived in camp, Thrushwing and Thornclaw approached Oakpelt. "Thank you, Oakpelt, because of you, Thornclaw is my mate!" Oakpelt nodded and smiled a little.
"You should go get some sleep, I'll be right there." Thornclaw told Thrushwing, who nodded and padded away.
"You like her, don't you?" Thornclaw asked Oakpelt. He nodded.
"But I could tell she liked you more. That's what love is, isn't it? Putting the other in front of yourself?" Oakpelt mewed. Thornclaw got sudden flashes. His mother, dying to protect him. His mentor helping Thornclaw out in battle. Leaping recklessly into battle to protect Thrushwing. He nodded.
"You're right. That is what it means. I'm sure you'll find another cat, and they'll see how lucky they are," Thornclaw mewed. He padded into the warriors' den and moved his nest closer to Thrushwing and curled up next to her. He fell into a calm, deep sleep.
